Insane. Who would’ve thought a Mario film would make $1 billion and probably a couple hundred million more.

I mean, if you take into account that the last Mario movie was a total bomb, sure. But, obviously, a lot has changed since then. Miyamoto was surprised how well it’s done. He knew it would be big, but it exceeded his expectations.

That last Mario movie doesn’t even really count as a Mario movie.

This movie was made in a lab to appeal to all the different types of people it could. I thought the general consensus was that it would be a huge hit. The Switch is one of the biggest consoles ever, Mario has been around so long that you have grandparents who grew up playing it, and it was made by the Minions people.

I think it’s just because the highest grossing video game film before Mario was only around $400 million so I only expected this to make like $700 max.

seven hundred dollars seems like a lowball to me

It still being one of the only kids movies in theaters plus the hype plus it being one of the safest, risk-averse movies on the planet guaranteed it a billion+.

Oh really? Would a risk-averse movie do THIS?

Nintendo and Illumination definitely knew what the people wanted. The 30%-35% declines weekend to weekend are extremely rare for blockbusters, especially in the month of April when the only major holiday is Good Friday through Easter Sunday.

Hopefully it doesn’t take 4-5 years for a sequel and they know how to balance out what comes next.

If they make movies as conservatively as they release games, don't expect a Nintendo Cinematic Universe. Expect another Mario movie in five years, maybe a Donkey Kong or Luigi's Mansion movie in seven. Maybe

Idk I think Nintendo’s elders that have been super conservative with the IP are starting to retire and the new regime is taking over which is more willing to print money. I’d expect more movies announced sooner than their typical game turnaround time

No way any movie gets greenlit without Shigeru Miyamoto approving it though. He will have to be involved every step of the way just like he was with Mario
