I of course already have a pretty detailed idea on what I'd do if we were barricaded in the classroom. However they did the whole "run-hide-fight" here so, my first instinct is if I hear the gunfire but it's far away in another part of the building, I'm sending my class out my door, down the stairs, and out the door at the bottom of the stairs. If it sounds closer then we're just barricading in here.

Of course an added element is my wife now works in the same building as me, so, if it ever happens here, It'll be twice as terrifying now.

I'm more worried about it happening at my son's school when he's old enough though. I spent a lot of time yesterday thinking about how young and innocent he is right now and how safe he feels at his preschool and etc, and all of that getting shattered and wrecking him for life...or worse, of course. Just gives me an awful helpless feeling.

My friend’s a teacher and so is her husband. They purposefully made sure that they work at separate schools in case anything were to happen at work. They have have two kids and don’t want to risk having something happen to both of them and leaving them alone.

I will stand by my stance that we need millennials and now Gen Zers to have and raise little lefty kids haha. But Millennials are a huuuuge generation. Boomers had us to work and pay into SS and Medicare, we're on track to not have have enough kids to support us in retirement. It's not a great situation, see: Japan

Kids are fun, they don't cost any money, and they basically raise themselves.

Yes. This. My infant is a delight and only a positive addition to my life. All the “parenting is hard” stuff are just lies from the previous generation wanting to play victim. Birds also aren’t real.

Luckily the retirement concerns don’t matter given our impending water shortages and climate crisis’ by end of the decade!

Japan, South Korea, and China are about to be three giant test cases about demographics and what happens. China being the worst of those three demographic wise.

  13. yeah except we’re likely not seeing the worst of either of those like many other countries will

Right...99.5% of us are not going to be killed by those things, and the demo shift means if there are things like food and water shortages, we may be less likely to feel those effects anyway if there's less young people here to eat and drink the food. But I guess that depends on immigration and if people keep coming here or not. If they do, our population is still expected to grow by a couple dozen million in the next decades I think.

It's really distinct when you compare it with some of the worst, here is USA vs. China demographics wise. I don't think the China numbers have been updated either based of what was released this year from them population wise. USA you would hope will be fine by being able to buffer with immigration (depending on Republicans of course). I also do wonder if we we will see a uptick in birth rate by the Millennials as we continue to age, seems we are ending up in marriage and houses later, will that also happen with kids?

Yeah I think we are going to see millennials starting to have kids, just maybe in older age cohorts. Based of the 2020 data I have seen the birth age of the mother has been tracking up in those groups. Those groups in the 30's are tracking up.

Oh don’t worry it’s just your grandchildren that will face the horrors of climate change. In the meantime it’s the world’s poors that are suffering just look the other way until you’re dead like a good American

That's why we need more grandchildren that were raised to believe climate change is manmade and needs to be solved!

You do know by that time catastrophic effects will be irreversible though. Like how many unbiased reports have to come out saying we need to make drastic changes in the next ten years for us to believe it?
I legitimately struggle with the idea of bringing more children into this world and then saying ah you deal with this impossible situation.

It's a two fold issue though and they are only linked to me because the climate change can got kicked so far down the road but at the same time not having the demographics to support your older generations is something we have never really experienced ever (I believe this is true). It is now being talked about that we don't even need growth population wise but you can't have the massive dropout like we are seeing in China, Japan, and South Korea.
