Seeing shit like this from people like her fills me with more hopelessness and dread than almost anything else. Not even saying “life can’t get better” or “we can’t make life better” but “life should not get better.” It’s so craven and empty and disgusting to see that it just destroys my brain.

Disgusting. When my Mom died after her liver transplant we got a bill for $755k from Northwestern.

This story does make me wonder if there was a billing error. When I got my kidney, Mayo originally sent me the full bill but when I called and double checked my insurance with them, my balance ended up being $0.

I had open heart surgery 11 years ago and that was when my dad taught me a great life lesson: "when you receive a medical bill just throw it away."

our house was foreclosed on a few years after. Prob not related.

 

I wasn’t in charge of that part, but I believe the estate had to pay a minimal amount and that was it. Thankfully, we got a lawyer right away and he helped with everything.

 

I have at least two ER bills from sports injuries that I never paid when I didn’t have insurance after college.

It’s been 14yrs and no one has ever called me about it.

 

It’s one step farther actually and into “we should make life a little worse” territory

 

That’s super surprising. I had several medical bills out and got calls all of the time. I don’t know when it’s supposed to start, but medical debt isn’t supposed to effect your credit.

 

For a short time at legal aid I helped represent folks who were being sued by debt collection companies who just buy debts and get default judgments and then do things like try to garnish wages to make money. A lot of that debt was medical debt and a lot of people treated a default judgment like a debt collection letter until they were working full time and not getting a paycheck. We live in a fucked up country
