Im surprised The Offspring havent been back to Riot since 2014. Really hope they play 2024 for a 30th anniversary of Smash (again)

Yeah they’re one of those bands that strikes me as being a “Riot Regular” (bands like Bad Religion, Pennywise, etc. that play every few years). Weird it’s been so long

I'm guessing Riot has tried to book the Offspring since 2014, but they seem very devoted to doing Tinley and other amphitheater tours every summer and either Tinley books them ahead of Riot or the dates don't line up..

Sum 41 & Simple Plan I guess are trying to tour every city as many times they can on their last big run.. isn't this like their third tour together since the pandemic lol

Same. I think it's probably because they played 2012 and then 2014. So they were poised to be an "every other year" band at one point...

I wonder if a part of it is the way they've been touring the last few half-decade or so. They seem to have either been focusing on things that are more "generic alternative/active rock" leaning (co-headliners with 311 and Sublime with Rome; various Wimmer festivals) or leaning hard into the "punk festival" thing a la Punk in the Park, Camp Anarchy, etc.

Riot seems squarely in the middle of all that. It could also be a money/stage slot thing for Riot. The Offspring are at the same level as say, Bad Religion or NOFX at this point... But those artists are probably cheaper.

The Offspring are def in a weird spot popularity-wise. They’re (or the way I see it) kinda in this weird “in between spot” in the punk/pop punk world where I’d say they’re about one step above Bad Religion/Pennywise-type bands, but one step below Blink or Green Day. They’ll sell out theaters on their own just fine, and they can also do amphitheaters fine too, but they usually have to do it as a co-headliner, or have solid support acts. The only other band of that realm that kinda takes that spot is Rise Against

I think at this point, I think they’re dipping into both ends of that spectrum (metal/rock fests, but also PID-type fests too) in order to cover all their bases and keep that level of momentum going.

That said, I do feel like Riot would still be a solid fest for them. I’m sure other logistics are in play though. I bet it’s an MXPX sort of thing.

Yeah, that's pretty spot on. I think you could argue that they're like, a half-step above Pennywise and a step above Bad Religion and Rancid or whatever... But the point would still be the same. Haha.

I do think, though, that they are at a point where name recognition is significantly bigger than draw. So they would need to headline a stage at a festival (and probably command that price) but in terms of solo headlining probably draw as well as most artists who would command that slot.

I think it's also a difference between having casual fans and diehards. The Offspring have a lot of casual fans, whereas Bad Religion have a lot of diehards and some casual fans.

That’s funny because I thought The Offspring were the same as BR. I thought The Offspring had more diehard than casual and that there were more diehard than BR had. But, I am living in their homeland, so my perspective on this is probably way off haha

Objectively, my parents have been in the grocery store & heard The Offspring songs & know the band name. Huge hits, several top 10 Billboard albums, several multi-platinum albums... but I don't know anyone who's dying to see them every time they tour, it's gotta be a good package or a fest. Bad Religion has barely cracked the top 20 on Billboard, but every Bad Religion fan I know wouldn't miss a tour within a 3 hour driving radius. Unrelated, it's so wild/cool how this happens, & that "popularity" and "success" are so subjective.

Brings me back to Everclear... those Summerland tours have great lineups that draw decently well for shed tours. I've seen Everclear play one off headliners to ~50 people on numerous occasions. I really fucking want Everclear to play Riot Fest

    Things have changed.

The Offspring is MUCH more popular than Bad Religion. Both at the peak of their popularity and even in the consciousness of casual listeners.

I think they’re saying Bad Religion has fewer overall listeners and “hits”, but much more dedicated fans (which I would agree with).

sure a lot of people loved the offspring in the 90s, but a lot of them grew out of their “punk” phase.

Bad Religion fans in the 90s are still degenerate punks who go to shows regularly.

Weirdly, Paramore is back in play since they didn’t end up on the lineup?

I would say they are! Specially as Foals and Linda Lindas are in there, and they have no Chicago show...

Yeah now I’m thinking Paramore is headlining this, they said after their show here last year they were coming back this year and left out Chicago on the tour poster.

and people were speculating JBREKKIE for Lolla which did not happen so maybe we get like JBREKKIE subheadline into Paramore with The Linda Linda’s opening the stage or something?

I’m also surprised Perry didn’t try to get Jane’s Addiction on this year since they cancelled last year.

I’m gonna predict them for Riot this year now haha

Maybe not definite, but them not at Lolla is weird with all the open dates around that weekend

  23. Knocked Loose, Sincere Engineer, and Alex G also out since they're on Lolla. Not sure if anyone else from that lineup was in play for Riot. Maybe 30 Seconds To Mars?

This would be so much fun.

From what I can see, not a lot of acts that could fit Riot: Knocked Loose, The Beaches, Sincere Engineer, Sueco, The Garden, maybe 30 Seconds to Mars.

Really excited for this year Riot!

Yeah it’s odd that their tour routing made them super likely for Lolla, but then that wound up not the case. I wonder if something happened behind the scenes? Maybe they were supposed to be on but then backed out? Odd
