Blueprint, and Jay-z, are both ridiculously higher on my favorite lists than Stillmatic (or Illmatic) and Nas

  2. Illmatic is the best album from either artist imo, although Reasonable Doubt is close (and tbf I still have a handful of latter-era Jay albums to listen to, but I'd be surprised if either of them surpassed those two)

The Blueprint is a fantastic record but i do feel like it's a bit overinflated in the jay convo compared to the albums that came before it

might just be where I'm at these days in my listening but I'd much sooner put on any of the volumes (particularly Vol. 2) or The Dynasty before it -- his flows are a lot more fun and adventurous on those records while maybe being more "imperfect" records compared to Blueprint

Personally, I find The Blueprint wildly overrated, but I also didn't like Jay before that album came out. I strongly dislike the Vol. series and Dynasty. Hated those albums.

I did like The Blueprint, and mostly everything from Jay after (sans the R. Kelly albums), but not nearly as much as everyone else.

To me, The Black Album is by far my favorite Jay album, and I think American Gangster is super underrated.

  6. So far I loved Reasonable Doubt and liked Vol. 2 and Blueprint. Wasn't huge on Vol 1 tbh. Skipped Vol. 3 and Dynasty this time around, but maybe I'll go back once I hit the staples.

Currently listening to Unplugged, and then I'll be hitting The Black Album, Collision Course (for nostalgia), and American Gangster.

I prefer Jay, Nas is not even in my top five, but I think Illmatic might be the greatest album of all time

There’s so much Jay-Z stuff I’ve never heard, I think I’ve maybe only listened to The Black Album and Reasonable Doubt front to back and even then it’s been probably since high school. Might be time to change that

I actually just did a full discography runthrough for Jay-z over the last year. Black Album easily #1, Blueprint close second, then Reasonable Doubt. Blueprint 3 is mostly a fantastic take on his poppiest side of things, Magna Carta has some super underrated stuff. Kingdom Come still isn't great, but there were maybe two tracks I was surprised to dig this time around. American Gangster is awesome but I think I liked it more when it came out.

  10. The Black Album is crazy good so far. The production is so joyous, makes me feel the way Graduation used to. It sounds like a victory lap

Illmatic is the greatest hip hop album of all time. Jay has 2 in the top 20, though

Both Nas and Jay peaked with their debuts and have had solid stuff after, but nothing to compare to what comes first.

Jay Z absolutely has stuff that compares to his debut. I didn’t hear RD until high school and already had him as one of the best of all time just based off of Black and Blue

I really don’t think RD is Jay’s best album. It’s a really good 90s rap album, but it’s isn’t nearly as “Jay Z” as other Jay Z albums, if that makes sense

You can't honestly think that black album "doesn't compare" to RD, that's straight up lying
