Your post said Sony was the issue so that’s why I mentioned it.

Amazon is covering the fee for Lord of the Rings AND just bought the rights for Tomb Raider. Amazon’s not hurting for money. The show is critically acclaimed and won several awards. It’s not really difficult to look at what else has been cancelled recently by Amazon (The Wilds, Paper Girls) and see a trend.

Just playing devil's advocate, I could see it from a different perspective. LOTR is the streaming service's most popular show. And Tomb Raider is a huge IP with a built in fanbase and reputation, so they're banking on it being a hit.

A League of Their Own, The Wilds, Paper Girls, even if they were critically acclaimed, didnt bring in an audience. I've honestly never heard of Paper Girls but I do remember The Wilds and ALOTO getting a lot of marketing when they came out. The Wilds got critical acclaim but mixed audience reviews. League got critical & audience acclaim but not a lot of viewership or fanfare. Plus I don't see it winning any awards, only nominated for one GLAAD award.

It'd be great if they put more support to their LGBTQ+ programming, but at the end of the day they're a corporation who are looking to make a profit. If people aren't watching the show, it's not getting award recognition or internet buzz, and it's especially costly due to a large cast and an IP licensing fee, they're gonna cut their losses. Even if Sony negotiated their fee, it's still pricey. My job centers around format and IP licensing, those invoices ain't small! Amazon may not be hurting for money but they're not gonna keep renewing a show that's burning a hole in their pocket.

Speaking of The Wilds, that's been sitting in my queue for forever I really need to start it. I started Yellowjackets this week and this sounds like its in the same wheelhouse.

Ya'll are being too literal. Playing devils advocate can just mean 'here is the other side, It's not necessarily my opinion, but it's the very real other side'. I get that the phrase often means a bad faith argument incoming, but clearly in this case, it was a potentially accurate assessment of why a lot of shows in a similar mold have gotten the axe.

I understand the desire and frankly the need for more diverse television, but it also has to be successful. People love to complain when it's the 'right' (for a lack of a better term), being the vocal minority and stirring up controversy and making a fuss, but sometimes that's the case the other way around as well. There can be a passionate, vocal fan group for a show, but at the end of the day, if it's too small of an audience, it is what it is (and that is being = cancelled).

Thank you! I only said "devil's advocate" to make it clear I wasn't trying to be confrontational or aggressive with our debate lol

The only thing I remember about this movie is that in the 6th grade we'd run to my buddy's basement and fast forward their parent's VHS copy to see the naked scenes haha

But when someone starts off with “I’m playing devil’s advocate,” it assumes the other person is ignorant to the other side, or that they even care. Some things really don’t need someone to argue for arguments sake.

Like, who the hell would go, “oh boy, I hope someone explains to me about how I’m wrong/ignorant.”

  14. Not responding to this particular instance but just in general: No one owes you a debate. You're not entitled to marginalized peoples' time, arguing until they change your mind. Do your own fucking research. Google exists. We're already exhausted dealing with our own shit, we don't give a fuck about the other side's perspective. Saying shit like playing devil's advocate just screams privilege.

People, this all started when I posted that the show was being cancelled due in part to the high price of licensing IP. Then I was told that I was wrong and that it's being cancelled due to some corporate agenda. So you can question my post but I'm not allowed to respond back?
Do my own research?? Google?? I work in Television and deal with development and renewals every day, trust me I have 10 years of "research" lol

Ya'll are being ridiculous. A League of Their Own is a fantastic show that unfortunately didn't have good enough ratings. It has been renewed for a second and final season, premiering Q4 2023. Conversation over.

Kind of seems like all you needed to say was your second paragraph. Not sure what devils advocating you had to do.

    Walked right into that one...

Argument side A: They are cancelling every show that has a diverse cast, or appeals to marginalized demographics! Foul play is afoot.

Argument side B: We are trying, but despite dedicated fan groups, the majority of our efforts in that regard have not hit the level of critical acclaim or audience engagement to justify renewal.

A normal person who isn't close minded and is confident and capable at defending their position if needed? Or someone who has the calmness to not engage if the other person is just spouting nonsense.

This isn’t a debate club. And they did not engage? They said they stopped reading. What’s the problem. This is over a show cancellation. Geez.

  21. We're too hurt by lack of representation to care about why they canceled one of our shows. Defending corporations is a silly look. They're not your friends.

It was not you I quoted, so no, I am not saying any of those things.

Okay. I don't think saying that a lot of shows that try to be have more representation aren't being watched enough to justify renewal, is defending a corporation. If anything, it's agreeing with you and anyone who says its a problem, and touches on the larger issue of why aren't these shows finding an audience? Are they not being marketed correctly / enough and are they even being given the chance to succeed?

I will miss not getting a continuation of paper girls on screen but it has prompted a renewed interest in getting through the graphic novels (which I own, just never gotten around to).
