Why is this show so incredible? And why did this season have to go by so quickly? Hope there isn't a ridiculously long wait for season 2. I'm not sure I'll ever be emotionally ready for Part II to be adapted though haha

Fucking perfect. They took everything that made the game a masterpiece and just absolutely nailed it. Holy shit. They could not have done the ending of the game any better, and that added scene with Joel and Ellie right before they got captured was so emotional and a perfect addition

I'll have more to say later but well fucking done. Instantly probably became one of my favorite shows ever

The montage of him slaughtering everyone as a stand in for the gameplay of that section. *chefs kiss*

Yeah as a non-game player, as soon as that slaughter began I was thinking "yeah some of this has to be shot for shot from the game, just from a 3rd person view instead of 1st. Like that one dude in the hospital room ducking behind a bed, or the other dude popping out at the nurses station to shoot, etc. Felt like a video game haha.

I was/am super conflicted on the choice he made but still was watching that specific part of the choice thinking "godDAMN he's a fucking beast" haha

Non game player, was the rooftop giraffe scene pretty faithful? Felt like something that could have been shot for shot

    My last non-game player writeup

This was, again, a pretty much spot-on adaptation. The scene of the backstory of Ellie's mother at the beginning was new (and her mother was played by Ashley Johnson, Ellie's VA in the game, in case anyone still didn't know), but it did an amazing job at contextualizing Marlene and Ellie's relationship and why Marlene's decision at the end was so hard for her. They did a really good job at making her not seem heartless and that she truly was heartbroken at what she had to do.

The way the episode starts with Ellie acting really distant and Joel trying to act like things are normal (so the reversal of their roles from the beginning) happens much the same, and they absolutely nailed the giraffe scene which is one of the most emotional moments in the game. In the game, you go and stand with her and they have pretty much the same conversation, but then the two just keep watching the giraffes, and it's up to you as Joel to be the first one to pull away and keep walking. I know several people who let them just stand there watching the giraffes for like ten minutes haha.

There's more gameplay here where Joel and Ellie have to go through a tunnel and fight some infected which ends with the Fireflies finding and capturing them but it really wasn't needed here, them just getting captured at the tents was more than fine. Speaking of which, the reveal of Joel's suicide attempt and him basically telling Ellie that she saved him was completely original to the show but I absolutely loved it, that showed such an absolute understanding and respect for these characters and I literally almost wish that was in the game. Incredible and emotional writing.

Finally, everything from the capture on is pretty much 100% from the game, to the point where I don't really need to write much more. The dialogue, Joel's killing spree, shooting the surgeon (lingering on him was a nice touch; if you know you know), him carrying her out... even the editing with the cut to Joel in the car and then flashing back to him killing Marlene was basically shot-for-shot, and the ending dialogue and the final shot of Ellie saying "...okay." is exactly the same as the game.

I can honestly say that I think this is one of the best adaptations I've ever seen. The game is very, very near and dear to my heart, potentially being my favorite game of all time, and this show just could not have been better done. I absolutely loved it when it was spot-on faithful like it was for so much of the runtime, and then when they decided to change or expand on things, which is what I was worried about going in, it was only additions that served to make the story and character work even more effective. Obviously having Druckmann on board, he wasn't going to let them ruin his baby, but I am just so endlessly impressed at how good this was. Even if they weren't going to adapt the second game (which I really want to replay now) this would have more than satisfied me

My only, ONLY complaints about this show is that I wish it was a little longer and had a little bit more room to breathe. Some more scenes of Joel and Ellie just traveling and bonding I think would have been nice, and I said this before but just one or two more infected encounters (people who did not play the game probably don't realize that you see clickers like all the time in the game, not just once), but these are minor complaints. 10/10 show overall

Kind of funny because I think the second game has way more human enemies than infected if I remember right lol

Yeah, that doesn't seem like a thing they should do. Unless they think that with 2 seasons for Part 2, they feel like they have enough room to keep some of the gameplay/action bits. Who knows, but I trust them after this season.

People being really cryptic about the surgeon/doctor are making this funny sad tweet I just saw seem even more sad haha. I have no idea what any of it means so. I just assume it’s about the cure and it being lost now or something
