  1. The Room is so bad it's good
    Disaster Artist is decent
This new thing just kinda sounds like a mockery of it all which sounds pointless and dumb

The new thing might sound a hair more appealing than the Disaster Artist to me? But, neither sounds worth watching.

  3. I enjoyed Disaster Artist but apparently James Franco is an asshole so

Never watched the room or disaster artist.

  5. The Room is actually really boring, aside from a few scenes that you can probably just find a compilation video of on YouTube. There's better bad movies out there, haha.

I find the Room entertaining in totality. Tom Bissell's book on the making of was good too.

Intentionally watching "bad" movies always feels strange to me. The Room is an amateur film made by a man who seems like he might have some mental problems. It's like picking on a bunch of guys playing basketball at the park for not being able to play like NBA players.

I think having a good experience with “good” bad art is a lil more nuanced and interesting than picking on lower level athletes. There’s a version of engaging with those kinda movies that can feel as useless as Cinema Sins, sure, but there’s also the outsider art and/or camp, etc., aspect.

The Room doesn't really have anything to teach us about bad movies, though, other than maybe sheer incompetence. A movie like Jaws: The Revenge is a much better example, both because it was professionally made and because of the ancestor it descends from. That line is getting blurred now with the Cocaine Bears and Sharknados of the world, though.

The Room is an unfiltered look into a very strange person’s brain. Every cinematic decision is potentially the most batshit one possible and that’s why it’s fun to watch. We’re so used to movies looking and feeling a certain way, and the Room has the faintest, slightest grasp of what that look and feel is, but fills out the rest with choices that are legitimately very funny.

I saw The Room in college. Tommy and Greg were there for questions and autographs, it was weird. People threw plastic forks at the screen during some random scene

There are a ton of good movies I haven't seen so I'm not going to waste time on something that is horrible

It's only fun with a large group of people otherwise not worth it at all

  15. Cocaine Bear isn't "so bad it's good," though. I'd compare it to M3gan and Violent Night, which I also enjoyed

I don’t count something like cocaine bear. That knows what it is and accomplishes what it set out to be. The room is from someone that has no idea what they’re doing and just made an absolute shit movie.

The Room is 100% worth watching because of this. It's a peek into the mind of a maniac. The reason I have gravitated towards no-budget and SOV films over the past few years is the same. I want to plunge the depths of madness. The Room is practically a major Hollywood romcom compared to some of them, but it’s a good primer.

I saw The Room with a bunch of people who had seen it many times before, it was kinda fun I guess

not only is citizen kane a great film in its own right, but once you see it you realize the influence that it (and welles) had on, well, every single movie that came after lol. incredibly fun watch. i think you'd like it

But they aren't these daring artistic decisions; they are basic incompetence. A woman announces she has breast cancer and it is never mentioned again. It wasn't some commentary about how people don't care about others or the lingering mortality we all must face, it was just something he forgot to follow up on.

I know that; but I find an appeal in some fringe artists who work completely independently of the cinematic institutions we recognize. It’s no less an expression of Wiseau’s psychology than another, more acclaimed auteur’s work might be of theirs, but it’s far more worthwhile than like, the Joker, which basically everyone here probably saw. Also, none of this is close to my primary cinematic diet or what I prioritize, but I avoided the Room for a long time because I felt similarly to many others: I didn’t want to waste time on something everyone said is bad. But bad doesn’t do the film justice. I wouldn’t champion Wiseau as a subversive mastermind, but it’s a singular cinematic experience because while there are lots of bad fringe artists, many of them directors, not many of them have produced anything like the Room.

I find watching things that don’t work or live outside convention helps clarify my relationship to convention and the status quo.

The Room doesn’t have the intellectual heft of like a Crispin Glover movie, but it’s very unusual.

And if nothing else, its enriching to involve yourself in a niche community

That was how I originally saw it and I absolutely hated the experience — I couldn’t enjoy the badness of the movie because everyone would scream every infamous line as it happened
