that Gizmodo article is embarrassing. They basically give one movie as an example and then the article just ends. If that’s all the proof they have have fatigue, they may not be proving what they think they are. I agree with their example of a fan service sequence, but they did not put in the work to justify writing that article.

the second article is interesting and relevant in some ways, but doesn’t really address what we are discussing. Using known things doesn’t automatically make something fan service. If it does, then yea, almost everything is fan service to the point that it has no meaning left and isn’t worth ever mentioning.

It’s pretty obvious there is not an agreed upon definition of fan service, especially given the explosion of fandom detailed in that second article. So I don’t really care what some theoretical showbiz people would say. Some, like Red Letter Media, would say all of Rogue One was fan service. I disagree, but I still love their review of it. It’s done in a very funny way. But fans who heard Disney was making new Star Wars didn’t clamor for a Death Star plans movie. If anything liked by fans from earlier projects is fan service, then again, almost everything is and has next to know meaning.

  12. There were several striking shots in just the trailers that never made it to the final cut. I love Rogue One but will always wonder what that other movie underneath it would've been.

This one is just a bts shot of the scene above, but it still looks cool.

Yea, the beach shots looked rad. I think I read at one point that they ran into Vader on the beach and yea… they were never making it off that beach in any cut I feel like.

I think I remember they made it out alive, but I could be mistaken. Vader on the beach though would've been dope.

Those scenes look so cool. It’ll always be tragic that we’ll never see the full thing.

Specifically that tracking shot of them running across the beach where the camera pans up a tiny bit and the AT-AT looks right at them and fires towards the camera - that is *exactly* the type of thing I dreamed about coming from Gareth Edwards directing a full-budget Star Wars movie. It perfectly blends his style with the OT aesthetic in a way that really wasn't technologically possible in the late 1970's / early 1980's and is honestly just so fucking cool.

I think "fan service" was the wrong word to describe Vader killing a bunch of randos in a hallway, and what I meant was more "inorganic". That shot of them running feels like a logical thing to be occurring during the climactic battle of a Gareth Edwards directed Star Wars war movie. Vader killing a bunch of people in a hallway did look cool, and the space battle did look cool also, and all of it was fun and I get that was what Disney wanted - but it also does feel like exactly what it was to someone who was really on the same wavelength with what Gareth Edwards was doing: someone else (Dave Filoni apparently, but also Tony Gilroy) coming in and shooting random Star Wars stuff with a full budget.

I can even admit that from a pure money-making standpoint Disney probably made the right call, and that's what Star Wars is to them and that's fine. But for people who love Garteth Edwards filmmaking and Star Wars, it's just sad that we got so close and even saw glimpses as a tease but never got to see it come to fruition.

They did explain why the TIE fighter shot was cut at least. The next moment would be an X-Wing blowing it up and the makers felt it was too similar to earlier where the AT-ACT was blown up by the X-Wings when it’s about to fire and didn’t want to use the same fakeout twice.

I know I used to give Tony Gilroy a lot of shit pre-Andor, but asking him if there could be a better cut of Rogue One seems pretty pointless, as he was the one brought in to "save" the movie and he came up with the cut we ultimately got. Of course he has to say that's the best version there could be. I would be much more interested in hearing what Gareth Edwards would say about the matter, but he's been extremely tight-lipped about it, at least in the press.
