Very interesting! Nothing new, really, but well-put and presented in an interesting way.

The "free market" argument literally goes out the window when there is no "free market" in actuality.

I hope more dates are being announced too. Santa Ana sold out before I could get a ticket :/

I think ultimately what we're all asking is "How big of a margin do we feel artists/promoted should make?" when touring. Concerts, by definition, are limited luxury events (as much as I hate to admit it). Given the fact they aren't a life necessity, they are the most susceptible to free market conditions.

Interesting read and thanks for sharing. I imagine the fee share/kick-back probably has a lot to do with an act's guarantee. So maybe acts with lower guarantees ultimately drive lower fees. The venue/promoter, however, likely entered into a contract with Ticketmaster so they aren't going ahead and sacrificing their kickback fee

Not to completely change the subject and I’m not sure if it has been touched upon in here but can we talk about how bad concert etiquette has gotten, specifically people having full on conversations during sets? I’m seeing The Beths right now and so many people around me were having full on conversations during the opener, Sidney Gish. I saw Samia last week and two women were having a full on convo directly behind me during most of her set and she was headlining! People say it’s a post-COVID thing because people haven’t seen each other in a while (then just go to a bar or someone’s house lol) but like shows have been back for over 1.5 years now and at some point you have to just call it what it is, people being rude. It also feels like it’s gotten worse over the 1.5 years since shows returned. Also it still baffles me people will spend $20-$60+ just to not pay attention to what they paid for.

I hate show talkers but it’s definitely not a post-covid thing unfortunately. I saw Death Cab in 2015 and the girl sitting next to me was talking about her personal life at full volume the ENTIRE show. When I saw Thom Yorke in 2018 he actually had to stop in the middle of the last song to tell some guy to shut the fuck up lol

I never understood why someone would buy an expensive concert ticket, plus expensive drinks at a venue as a night out plan, even worst when its like an acoustic set or similar where people chats are louder than the actual music.

There were quite a few jackasses when I saw the NFG acoustic tour. Loudly having conversations during the entire set and then absolutely screaming lyrics to 2 or 3 of their biggest hits. Every acoustic tour I’ve been to in this scene is like that. The Where’s the Band tours were probably the worst example of that. Drunk morons screaming out requests to every performer and then talking during their set when they didn’t play what they wanted lol

Few things make me as physically uncomfortable as watching an acoustic song/set and hearing audience conversations over the performer.

When I saw Modest Mouse back in December, I was standing by a guy who repeatedly kept yelling out the names of random song titles throughout their whole set. It was beyond annoying because

    1. He kept yelling at them to play songs that they already played

    2. He also kept yelling out songs that the band were gonna play anyway since they played The Lonesome Crowded West front-to-back

    3. He was literally at the back of the venue. Like… you think the band is gonna hear your request all the way back there?? Lol

In 2013 I went to the Warped Tour Acoustic Basement Tour and people were talking during Geoff Rickly’s set. He actually stopped during a song to yell at people talking and told them to shut the fuck up. It was so awkward. Geoff was definitely drunk and you could tell he was not in the mood for that shit.

Emos Not Dead cruise had a ton of talking during acoustic sets. Had to tell a drunk to shut up during Silverstein’s acoustic, the crowd turned against an asshole during Emery’s acoustic, but Cartel’s acoustic takes the cake… got there a little late and place was packed but you couldn’t even hear the band because so many people were talking. Never seen anything like that, noped out after 1 song

people yelling out song requests annoys me, but people talking during shows doesn’t bother me necessarily. in a sense they paid to be there, so they have the right to do whatever they want i suppose

artists stopping songs to yell at the crowd for talking is also whack to me, idk. you know it’s gonna happen, tune it out and carry on i would think but i don’t go to a lot of acoustic shows i guess lol

I saw Sunny Day Real Estate a couple nights ago and there was one guy standing behind me who would not shut the fuck up. He’d whistle super loud at least 3 times per song. And every time the band said anything, he’d respond as if they were talking to only him. Like, at one point Jeremy said “it’s nice to see all your smiling faces” and the guy yelled out “YOU CANT EVEN SEE ME!!!” or when Jeremy picked up his acoustic guitar, the guy was like “OH HERE WE GO! SLOW SONGGGGG!!!” Or whenever the band would say “thank you” he’d yell “YOU’RE WELCOME!” I eventually got sick of it so I moved, and when I passed him, the guy yelled “UH OH! THIS GUY’S LEAVING!”

whether the guy paid to be there or not, it’s sooo fucking annoying when people act like that at concerts and comedy shows. Like, just shut the fuck up and realize you’re not the only person in the room. No one around you thinks it’s funny or cute, and neither do the performers.

This isn’t trying to start an argument, but you saying they paid to be there as there right to be inconsiderate to everyone else that also paid to be there is illogical. Even if it’s an opener you don’t like, there could be others there that paid to enjoy, it’s just like a movie, play, ballet, orchestra, just be quiet and enjoy the show and talk inbetween sets.

i think everyone paid to be there all the same, so you can do what you please personally

people don’t scream lines back to the actors in plays/movies/etc, so concerts inherently allow room for this to happen

i can see it being annoying, personally i skip openers nearly every time to avoid being a distraction (and also selfishly to avoid being bored), but what are ya gonna do? yell at these folks and instigate a situation?

    These people are the worst.

When I saw Anthony Green open for Thursday a few months ago there was a super annoying woman in the front row who kept yelling for someone in the venue while he was playing solo songs by himself. During one of the song she screamed some of the lyrics so he stopped the song for like 20 seconds because he couldn't go anymore and had to regroup.

i tore a hole in the fabric of time Moderator

I just turn to people and say “I paid to hear them, not you” and it usually gets them to shut up and/or move. If they try to start something, I get security. People aren’t that tough the instant they face the consequences of their own actions. Concerts are too expensive for someone else to ruin the artist’s show and my enjoyment of it. Call me entitled, idc. Artists 100% have the right to call out bad audience members, too.

Somehow I always hear about people getting thrown out by security but I've only seen that happen 2-3 times and I only vividly remember one of these.

It was a a sold out Chevelle show in Chicago about 5 years ago and everyone was packed like sardines (HOB sucks). There were 2 guys up front and while Chevelle were setting up one of them went to get a drink. As soon as there was a bit of space left a super douchey guy and his friend immediately pushed people to get to that very small space. The guy that was waiting for his friend to come back told them that he is saving that spot for his friend and that other guy said "Yeah? What are you gonna do about it?". They started arguing real loud with the douchey guy being super loud and pushy. Eventually more people got involved (especially the ones that were pushed earlier) and everyone started ganging up on the douche to the point where security got in there and decided to kick him out. People were high fiving each other lol

This argument reminds me when Clairo was catcalled on stage almost every night and there were people defending the catcallers saying exacty this: "they pay to be there, they can do what they want".

I know its not the same, but just because you paid doesnt entitle you to do whatever you want

i mean of course that’s vastly different. this is comparing sexual harassment to someone talking which, at most, is annoying but not a crime lol

yes, it doesn’t entitle you to commit crimes. but does it allow you to talk to your friends when you want? sure lol
