Like every 80s comedy is like about a white guy who pretends to be black so he can become a college women's soccer coach and commit sexual assaults but the one comparatively less problematic (still problematic but less so than others) and actually says something about class is the most overrated of them all. Got it.

I just think Caddyshack should be lumped with those.

Looking back it is insane that people used to consider Animal House an iconic American comedy.

Caddyshack's critique of class is pretty surface level. However, it is still the best of that list for the Dangerfield bits. That's why Back to School is better than all of them.

I haven't watched Caddy Shack in years, but for some reason the line that has stuck with me the most is when Bill Murray tells the old guy "I don't think the heavy stuff is going to come down for quite some time" during the storm. It's not even the best line in that movie but it cracks me up every time I think about it.

The Caddyshack book is very, very good. One of the better written/researched/structured “making the movie” books that I’ve read

    Edit:
To be clear I don’t care about the movie either

All movies we watch today aren't going to hold up in another 40 years and that's okay.

We get better (hopefully) over time.

The Blues Brothers holds up the best of any of that stretch of comedies. Unless we’re putting Ghostbusters in there

It really just depends. Seinfeld and friends are both 90s shows and Seinfeld for the most part still holds up and doesn’t have a ton of problematic stuff whereas friends has a ton.

In terms of comedies that were released from 1980-1989 that i think are still funny: Airplane, Spaceballs, Monty Python's The Meaning of Life

Huh im watching seinfeld through for the first time and I'm only on season 4 and there's a ton of stuff that doesn't hold up. Which I'd be more surprised if it did, but def has gay panic, reinforcement of gender norm stereotypes, etc that are v common in 90s sitcoms. And a random anti union sentiment episode lol. Doesn't mean it's bad. Just def dated in that old sitcom way that most are.
