The stuff about Bryans family/kids/desire to put his wrestling over all of that was fantastic. And honestly what he should have been doing the whole time. Like a more deranged version of that Miz shoot from Talking Smack.

The "my woman left me" bit was just dumb. His fiancee literally posted him wearing his title to bed a couple months back...

Yeah, I was thinking this would be like all the backstage stuff from Rhodes to the Top, which was generally pretty good. Its always the forced reality stuff ("CAN CODY RHODES GET A CAR SEAT IN A CAR!?!?!?") that was bad on Rhodes to the Top...and the part where he kept trying to sell that Ogogo promo as important when it flopped so hard

Dunno, i loved it. His eyes even looked like those of someone who hasn't slept in weeks cuz he is so obsessed.

Bryan should win and then finally introduce the yes chant to aew. The fans want it.

Let's get these people moving faster!

I can both believe that his separation from his fiancée is real, and also that it was never intended to draw sympathy in the way his past emotional promos have. It felt to me that he was supposed to still come off as a deranged and self-absorbed heel, that unlike his cheap heat promos may still have been grounded in some truth. Which is all to say that it felt more self-aware than some people seem to have read it as, though people still don't have to like it.

I use my in-laws reaction to see what non-smarks like because they watch every week. They love OC, The Acclaimed and Danhausen. They loved MJF up until the Danielson feud & pretty much leave the room whenever he cuts a promo now, although they can't really get into Danielson either. Everything else they kind of tune out of.

    In a total hypothetical:

If you could have one of the following back in AEW, who would you choose and why?

    CM Punk

    Cody

for me, it’s Cody all day long. The spark was there with Cody and he clearly was able to have a healthy backstage presence with almost every single person. I think when his WWE run is over he’s gonna come back if he’s satisfied with the story he is getting to tell. It’s clear AEW misses Cody, even when we all ragged on him toward the end.

CM Punk to me is a quick honeymoon of like 2-3 weeks of ratings and then a ticking time bomb of more chaos. I just don’t see it working out.

if backstage stuff wasn't a factor, punk. on-screen punk thrives in the AEW environment, even if his last few months there weren't stellar. Cody's entire on-screen persona was made for WWE

with the backstage stuff, yeah Cody

Oh wow, ok...there was just something odd in the way he approached it, unlike the locker room/CM Punk story where he took a different tone to draw sympathy, figured he was just working.

I mean, Cody is a better worker, and if he came back to AEW now...he might actually get a legit babyface run with a hyped up fanbase. Might be wishful thinking, but I can also see him having a different perspective on how to book himself and structure feuds with how well his WWE stuff is going.

I think even if Punk had no backstage drama, you get more out of Cody week to week. And then of course, Punk has HUGE baggage.

    Two parts here.

Ratings are usually a trailing metric -- basically, the strength of your rating is usually based on the buzz of what came before it. So, a good show is likely to lead to a better rating the week after, and a bad show could do a good rating, while then kneecapping the next week...which could be a better show.

At the same time: no NBA competition last night.

I didnt see this til later, yeah, that makes sense...their M 18-49 is like 50% higher than it has been.
