Saturday is definitely the day to go if you could only go one day.

I don’t think anyone was giving them slander. There are just bands that are billed under them that are far bigger. Is it a respect thing? Most likely. But considering the history of the fest I’m not surprised.

It didnt really strike me as odd, but i guarantee itll be more sparse for MXPX than Anberlin/Hatebreed. People not invested in them will just go home because they'll be exhausted.

It's super weird that MxPx is billed as high as they are. I love 'em but there's no way are they more of a "headliner" than 2/3 of the bands listed on the second line, hah.

But FWIW, Mike is on the record as effectively saying that MxPx will only play festivals if the money and their scheduled time slot are what they feel is worth their time. So it was probably the only way they could get them to play. And I do think it's partially a "respect" thing as far as the other bands just being cool with it who arguably could be in that slot.

Strong booking, weird time slot, but still kinda cool to see. And I hope it goes better than expected for 'em.

I hope you are wrong because this sounds extremely douchey on his part. Acting like they are owed something? I hope Anberlin and Hatebreed are getting paid a headliner fee. Oof

Eh, I mean, if their stipulation for playing is x amount of dollars and a slot that makes sense for them, then it's up to the promoter to decide if they are willing to do that.

I've heard Mike say it multiple times on his own podcast. Obviously, I'm paraphrasing but... That's the general gist. He's outright said that's why they haven't played Riot Fest. The money they'd make and the set time they'd be given.

It's not really them saying "yeah, we deserve to headline over Hatebreed and Anberlin" so much as them saying "we'll do it so long as we get paid X and play at time Y." A lot of bands do it. I'm sure it's not a sleight against anybody else on the bill. It's just what they're willing to do (or not). And in this case, somebody on the organizer's side decided it was worth it.

EDIT: A lot of bands do this too, BTW. They just don't usually talk about it in such clear terms. Whenever you hear a band say "we just couldn't make it work" in an interview about being on a festival or whatever...

That must have taken some strong convincing on their part to the bigger bands. Lmao

I mean, for all we know the other bands may not have known until recently. Maybe Hatebreed or Anberlin has a flight to catch later that night. Maybe MxPx signed on before anybody else and said "we'll headline your lightest day" before the festival knew they could book one of the other bands and they were locked in with them as headliners. There's so many different things that play into it...

Can I just point out how weird it is to see The Pink Spiders on here with Saosin, Thursday and Enter Shikari?

I know I'm like the only fan of that band, but it's just really bizarre

I kinda like that they’ve taken a few leaps in booking some slightly more random acts. Every year has seen a minor expansion in genre rep that’s mostly worked. Games We Play notwithstanding last year.

games we play definitely worked last year. they were fun and the crowd was into it. they also had more fans at their set than some of the other bands i personally saw on that same stage (hidden in plain view, the higher) throughout the weekend. i think they were a smart booking that got people down to the venue earlier that day.

I just really didn’t like them, haha. I caught their cover of “Cruise” and one other song coming out of the shed, iirc.

    I do not exist.

Wow just seen the full line up. So much better than last year. Would definitely try and go if I lived in the US.

There’s a new podcast interviewing Jonny and Chad on the Songs & Stories pod (Matt & Devin from Emery interviewing them - it’s the old BC podcast feed).

They go through the line up.

    Few bits of interesting information:
    - they made money in year 1 but made losses last year mainly due economy / prices.
    - the plan was to do a reduced Friday but due to demand they increased the line up
    - Chad sees 2024 as the last one. They’re committed to one more after 2023.
    - Emery confirmed for 2024. Chad is eyeing up quite a number of 20 year performances for that year…

I like that the heart of it is still the people and the music. It comes across as refreshing. As I said, I think they’ve got the line up better balanced and more appealing this year.

This is cool. Can’t make it down. Wish Maylene was back on the main fest, though.
