  1. there isn't a short enough way to summarize everything. it's best to just put on your headphones and listen to Is A Real Boy and pretend like it's 2006 or whatever and just live in that moment and never look beyond.

General on-sale for Beyonce today had less than 1,000 tickets available for night 2 in Toronto. Every single ticket was Platinum, with the lower level starting at $1,100, middle deck and upper deck were/are $725 each, with GA being close to $6k per ticket.

The greed here is through the roof.

Is that surprising given she did a gig in Dubai for like $15MM?

Thinkin Ticketmaster is never gonna stop and it feels like I see the regular seats move to platinum seats even for smaller artists more now than I ever did.

You mean, the acts are never going to stop because they want to get in on that premium revenue stream.

How much of it is the acts and not just Ticketmaster seeing the demand and doing it themselves? They/Live Nation get a massive bulk of the money anyways from the sales.

Also have I been wrong on dynamic pricing being platinum seats? I thought dynamic meant the price going up on the regular seats during the sale and platinum just being a thing Ticketmaster does?

Ticketmaster doesn’t automatically turn on Platinum or Dynamic pricing. It’s agreed upon by the artist. Taylor is the only one of note that made sure dynamic pricing was disabled.

Yeah...this is incorrect. The bulk of ticket sales are to pay for the artists fee. The dynamic pricing/platinum also majority goes to whoever you are going to see with, I believe, the promoter getting a cut. The ticket fee is also split between promoter, act, building and ticketing platform. Historically, the act/promoter has hidden behind the ticketing platform to paint them as a big evil corporation when, in reality, ticket prices have increased because they have been underpriced for decades and the secondary market exposed the true market value.

I always thought platinum was ticketmasters doing and separate from dynamic since I’ve been seeing it for a while now. Like I’ll see platinum but no dynamic pricing where the regular tickets go up in price mid sale.

Interesting, I had read something about TM/LN getting 50-70 percent of ticket sales money not long ago which I thought was an insane figure.

Platinum is Ticketmaster choosing "the best seats" and charging more for them until they haven't sold until the week of the show.

Platinum is the result of dynamic pricing. So if a section is in demand, dynamic pricing allows it to be come platinum. There are some obvious kinks to be worked out with the algorithm in my opinion (like, wow, no shit the GA Pit section up front is highly in demand) which would allow for more transparency before buying. I also think there should be a higher limit to platinum to not let things get out of control but I understand that merely allows secondary sites to go nuts.

Technically, yes, but that is money they are essentially recouping for paying the act an upfront fee. So, for instance, if Blink 182 books Madison Square Garden at $5MM price tag, the tickets are priced accordingly to recoup that $5MM and then the promoter makes their bread from concessions, parking, ticket fees, etc.

I agree with all of this, the part about tickets being underpriced for decades really irks me. We’re quickly moving towards a situation where a large portion of society won’t be able to afford live music from the biggest stars.

There’s so few artists doing anything to combat these prices. I commend Taylor for keeping her tickets at least semi-affordable, and Metallica doing the discounted tickets for those under 16 is really cool.

As a teenager I went to sooooo many concerts from big acts. Working as a paperboy and the occasional summer job I could usually afford a ticket. I couldn’t imagine being 15 now and asking my parents for $300 for a concert ticket.

Ticket prices rarely dissuade me from going to shows I really want to, but seeing Beyonce's nosebleed at $160 before fees was jarring. I saw her and Jay Z for less than $100 each on their tour.

Yeah, last time I saw her I paid half of what I did this go around for essentially the same section

Yeah I feel that same pain. When I was in my 20's/early 30's and making less than $100k, no way I could afford to go to as many shows as I did if prices were what they were today. I think the under 16/under 18 pricing idea is a good one (similar to kids tickets in movies). If acts really do want to keep prices low, they have to institute some sort of paperless system and some sort of closed loop platform so if you really can't go, you can release your tickets and they go back in the pool. I think there are consumer laws that prohibit that (i.e if you purchase something it's yours and you are free to keep and/or sell if you wish) which makes it hard to execute.
