Played for a few hours last night. A lot of slow burn to get the learning techniques down, but walking around the school is so immersive and cool. Not yet overwhelmed with icons or anything, but I do like how they handled directions to your next taskk.

People want to play the game and are gonna play it.

People are aware of the individuals involved.

Others aren’t going to, and that’s perfectly okay.

I really, really don’t think any more needs to be said on the subject. Can we all just leave it alone?

Fuck JK, and the designer sounds like a complete tool, but I really am still looking forward to checking this out although I just started Elden Ring the other day so it might be a while. I also wish this had come out a decade or two ago because my brain probably would have exploded.

If this hasn't been posted yet:

    https://www.gamespot.com/amp-articl...nder-stance-and-hogwarts-legacy/1100-6501632/

"If you are not willing to give up a piece of entertainment in solidarity against the harm JK Rowling continues to enact; then how can trans people feel assured you’ll be willing to fight for us in more important areas, such as anti-trans violence, be it physical, mental, personal, systemic or legislative, especially as the discrimination continues to rise? So while I will say you are not a transphobe or a bigot if you buy Hogwarts Legacy, do not also claim to be a trans ally if you do buy the game. Being an ally means being willing to give something up, and what's more, to stand up for those who are vulnerable."

It's really as simple as that tbh

I thought that discussion of this game was banned in the video game forum and the discussion was told to be took elsewhere, and now it is, people are still here trying to shut it down and convince people they're doing something wrong.

I'm excited to get to playing this eventually. Let me know how it is people.

Honestly, Resetera (arguably the biggest video game forum there is) has banned discussion of the game altogether. I wish we could do the same here.

You don’t have to come into this thread if you don’t want to discuss it. We won’t discuss it in the general video game thread out of respect. This is a Harry Potter thread so anything Harry Potter related is allowed.

I can’t claim to be able to articulate what I think the exact difference is, but if JK Rowling were still writing HP books, I would under no circumstances read them. That may be a meaningless hypothetical, but I have “given up” a lot of art created by abusers, racists, etc. But in this case, assuming the game itself is not hateful beyond the association with the IP’s original creator, I think it’s a very online way of framing the discussion to make the claim that playing it means you aren’t or can’t be an ally, or that as a result you clearly can’t be trusted on when it comes to fighting against something that is actually, actively harming trans people. I don’t know. I think I’m struggling a bit with this one.

Yup. This one is very tough to articulate because the "creator" isn't involved with this creatively, but they are still going to be cashing a check for it.

There's a lot of scenarios out there, and this doesn't really fit any of them. Brand New, Kevin Spacey Movies, old New Found Glory, Joe Rogen/Spotify, Chappelle/Netflix, etc. It's easy to relate listening to All Time Low as supporting them, but if I have a Spotify subscription am I supporting Joe Rogen (or Netflix/Chappelle)?

JK Rowling also has more money than god, and the money she makes off of this is a rounding error in the grand scheme of her wealth and net worth. However, she loves to talk about how she continues to cash the checks from people that hate her.

The line is so blurred with this game and Harry Potter, it's tough for people to grasp and any online discussions around it just turn into a fight.

I think the whole thing is very online. This is a genuine question to educate and possibly take a different stance, but what is the active harm that she's doing? I am not aware that she denotes to anti trans/anti LGBTQ organizations, or that there there is a rise in rhetoric or violence on her behalf. It seems a stretch to say that supporting something she's not really associated with for opinions that she's been broadly condemned for online, is an indication of where your beliefs lie, and how much of an ally you're capable of being.

it won't take you more than 5 minutes to google why Rowling is harmful and hateful, I don't think we need to give a history lesson in this thread. You can also probably search her name in the Accountability in Entertainment thread for a lot of content.

that said, i'm just so exhausted by the drive-by labeling of 'transphobe' to anyone remotely interested in playing this video game. harassing someone who wants to play a video game doesn't make you any more of an 'ally' than wanting to play the game makes someone a transphobe.

I mean she has a massive platform and is a de facto spokesperson for an ideology whose abhorrent rhetoric can easily be traced to violence against trans people

Isn't JK Rowling on the record of stating that the fact that as long as people keep watching Harry Potter movies and playing Harry Potter games and reading Harry Potter books and going to Harry Potter theme parks, that is evidence that people support her crusade against trans people?

we can't even mention Brand New on this forum but it's perfectly okay to openly salivate over a game that is based on the works and directly benefitting someone driving people into literal suicide lmao clown show

also now one is calling anyone a transphobe here but like you couldn't even wait to buy it used?

People acting like supporting this game is okay need to do some serious soul searching. I’d respect it a hell of a lot more if some of you just came out and said “my personal entertainment matters more to me than the lives of trans people”
