Yea, not at their peak quality wise. Creative? A valid stance. But Beggars is a far stronger collection of songs. I’d put Vheissu, Illusion, and Artist as a better collection over Index as well. I think each has a couple weaker songs. Still good. I mean hey, it’s still Thrice. Weaker Thrice is still good music. I do think Air is easily the weakest of the 4.

But I think using the word Index was used intentionally when naming Alchemy. It works as something you can go to, to “look up” what you want (choosing an EP) and then “studying it.” I’d almost argue it’s not meant to function as a whole or even halves as it was released. It’s not intended as a traditional album, so I think that’s okay. Not every release has to be presented in such a way. The vinyl release literally being a book with essentially separate chapters for each EP really works for my view on it. It is one project, but I don’t think it’s meant to be in a particular order between EP’s. I am sure someone asked the band about this back when it was released. But I’m not digging through interviews from 2008 and such. Maybe someone recalls their view on it?

    Fuck it

    Beggars
    Vheissu
    Illusion of Safety
Revisited (this may be biased by having listened to it 7 times already)
    The Artist In The Ambulance
    Water
    Earth
    Palms
To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere
    Deeper Wells
    Major/minor
Horizons / East (in defense of this album. It came out during an insanely awful depression time for me and my brain honestly couldn’t experience joy. I have gone back since and enjoyed it more and more. I could see this moving up a few slots with more time with the album.)
    Fire
    Identity Crisis
    Air

  3. I don't know why the discussion about The Alchemy Index suddenly brought this back to mind but does anyone else remember the fake blurb about their next project being a series of EPs inspired by the periodic table, or is it something I've dreamed?

I view alchemy as two albums, and vol 1 and 2 are in my top 5 albums from the band.

Air is so damn good. Surprising to me that I’m seeing it so lowly rated. Broken Lungs? A Song for Milly Michaelson?? Daedalus!!!?

I only adore and love Daedalus. I could honestly lose the rest and not care. If it was Daedalus six times in a row it would be way higher.

Daedalus is one of my all time favorite thrice songs, so I am glad I’ve seen them play it live a couple times now

I saw them play it on the Palms tour. It was so good. The crowd seemed to have no idea how to react to it. It was weird.

They did fan requests online ahead of one of their tours (farewell/reunion I think) and it got high favorability then

Melting Point of Wax 2.0 is the true MVP of the rerelease. Took a song I liked into a song I love. Absolutely next level now.

Yeah, my initial impressions are that Paper Tigers, Hoods, Melting pot, and Blood clots are the biggest beneficiaries of the Revisited treatment. All those songs have risen greatly in my esteem.

    Paper Tigers rips relentlessly.

That said this re-release is easily my favorite Thrice record, edging out the reigning champion, The Artist In The Ambulance.

Blood Pact, Dark Stone, or Void of Light if you’re going for a single song. Really can’t go wrong with either Death Spells or Dimensional Bleed if you want to check out a full album.

Think they’d ever re-record illusion of safety? I feel like that one could be really great with Dustin’s newer voice based on the live recordings I’ve listened to!
