That’s why I’m making it a goal to see them next year. I don’t really listen to a lot of the 90’s punk I was obsessed with when I was in my early teens, but it always has a spot in my heart and I’ll always love it. It’s gonna be weird not having NOFX around. I actually feel legitimately bummed about it.


I’ve always thought of NOFX as being one of the “Big 4” of 90’s punk. I’ve always thought of them, Bad Religion, Pennywise, and Rancid all being the Big 4. So to me, this kinda feels like Slayer breaking up and only 3 of the Big 4 still being active. I guess inevitable, but strange, no less

 

can't wait until NOFX's last song on their last album is "I Lied About Retiring"

or better yet "Lienoleum"

 

This is pretty spot-on. But there's another part of me that kinda feels like it's a good thing... I feel like every genre other than skate-punk that was big in the 90s has seen some sort of resurgence or expansion in recent years. Younger bands picking it up and running with it.

And I'm convinced this usually happens because they don't have access to the older artists. Can't see them live, etc. So they create their own thing to make that happen.

With the "skate-punk" bands, though? They never really stopped. There's no need to start your own bands of that ilk because there's already so many of them. Even the B- and C-tier acts are still going for the most part! Nobody was ever given a chance to "miss" that music.

So, I dunno. I kinda feel like them hanging it up might actually encourage new bands to start up in that same vein. And in the meantime, it'll allow other bands not of that ilk but parallel to that scene (Menzingers, Pup, Jeff Rosenstock) to get a schedule "bump" at festivals and maybe even force the Punk in the Park-type fests to acknowledge they exist when people get tired of seeing the same 4-5 rotating headliners every year.

But yeah, it's gonna leave a sad empty hole in my heart. Haha.

I don't think they're ending as a band. Just not touring/playing shows anymore. They have like... Two more albums already recorded or something.

But still. That is a hilariously accurate potential song title that Fat Mike would 100% use. Well played.

I’m willing to bet any amount of money that Bad Religion and/or Alkaline Trio will be on the final show(s) in LA

 

Bad Religion 100% it would be or would have been cool if Trio ever did any of the punk in drublics though

 

Good looks! I had missed that when I first looked earlier today. This changes things... Time to figure out my schedule and ability to go by Friday when tickets go on-sale.

I recently did an active re-evaluation of that album and it holds up way way better than anticipated. Some of it still feels very much "of its time" (I.e., the lyrics on "Letters To You" and "Stay With Me") but it still works really well... And holds up better than the misogynistic lyrics other groups were churning out.

All this is to say that a Finch WIITB 20-year tour would be rad and an album play at Riot would be sick! Especially if they threw in "Worms of the Earth" as a bonus.

 

they could definitely fit in Worms of the earth, the album is 1 hour, 1 minute, but Ender is over 13 mins and i doubt they do all the ambient/instrumental stuff, so with an hour set, could squeeze it in

 

What are your other favorites? I wasn't there the year that Glassjaw, Senses Fail, TBS, and Against Me! all did multiple plays. And I'm sure some of those would have wound up on my list. But based on the ones I've seen, my favorite album sets have been:

NOFX - Punk in Drublic
The Lawrence Arms - Oh!! Calcutta! (plus the BS&T EP)
Rancid - ...And Out Come The Wolves
The Menzingers - On The Impossible Past

The Get Up Kids, Weezer, and Bayside all get honorable mention nods for me.

That's also one of those albums that's kinda perfectly structured for an album play. The biggest "hit" is the last track and the other "big songs" are nicely spaced throughout. So that'd be dope!

 

Hearing Against Me play Transgender Dysphoria Blues in full was so sick.

 

I wasn’t there but I don’t think it gets better than Weezer playing Blue and Pinkerton

 

same. i was 2 years into thinking i was going to lolla every year, and that booking is what made me think "damn i gotta switch to riot fest instead!" and now ive been going every year since, haha

 

I wasn't there for the indoor sets but the year they played Blue outdoors was great! Definitely in my top five. The four I listed just resonated with me more emotionally, if I'm being real about it.

It wasn't the band's fault, but the set-up for the stage they were on that year just kinda sucked. And it was also a drag to know I was missing part of the Cure to see it. So I was partially distracted the whole time. Haha.

 

I saw Blue in its entirety during 2014 but that was maybe the worst concert experience ever and felt like I was gonna die because of the crowd crush.

Saw AM! do Eternal Cowboy and New Wave at the 2019 aftershow and that was wayyyy better

 

I'm glad I wasn't alone in being miserable for the Blue show in 2014. Worst crowd experience I ever had. There was a good amount of pushing but nothing that crazy where I was but everyone around was getting so pissy and it was just not very fun. I wish I went to the Cure

 

I saw that tour here in Boston and boy, was it a blast! I really wanted to get to Riot that year... But by the time it was announced my partner and I were already locked into two other festivals (Back to the Beach and Camp Anarchy) and it kinda just felt like we couldn't justify another trip.

All of this. I remember walking across the field, watching a few songs from the Cure, and getting over to that "section" of the festival as Primus was playing "My Name Is Mud." I saw how wild that pit was and opted to stay in the back right in front of one of the rides, thinking "This will be a great spot! I can see the stage just fine and people will be rushing forward to the stage so I'll probably have plenty of room."

Nope. The crushing was happening from pretty much every angle and it sucked the fun out of it for a decent portion of the set. That's about the point where I decided the carnival rides were just an annoyance. Haha.

 

Extremely fair, can’t imagine that going up against the cure. I’d be torn up

 

i feel vindicated in that this makes Kenny Loggins appearing at Riot Fest this year at least 1% more plausible than when I suggested it
