Portland Bookstore Defends “Fuck Portlandia” Sign

The bookstore “In Other Words,” which is often featured in Portlandia, has posted a message about why they are no longer working with the TV show:

Several months ago the In Other Words community agreed to discontinue our relationship with Portlandia. This was a direct response to a particular egregious filming of the show in our space which saw our store left a mess, our staff mistreated, our neighbors forced to close and lose business for a day without warning, and our repeated attempts to obtain accountability or resolution dismissed. It was also a direct response to a show which is in every way diametrically opposed to our politics and the vision of society we’re organizing to realize. A show which has had a net negative effect on our neighborhood and the city of Portland as a whole. Shortly after this decision was made, a volunteer placed the Fuck Portlandia sign in our window.

I don’t know many people that actually live in Portland that like this show.

Everyone I know that lives in Portland (or not) loves this show. The few that I've met that don't like it, literally don't "get it" because it's too weird for them

You win haha. I had no idea so many people didn't like it up there. Beyond the bookstore, what are the main reasons for not liking the show? I'm genuinely curious

  6. The gentrification angle is definitely one I've heard a lot recently. The population growth is causing some real problems.

Also, the show isn't very funny. Heh. There's a couple skits that I've laughed at (the BSG one, for example), but by and large after the novelty of seeing your town and places you've gone on TV wears off, it's just not that entertaining to me.

I've heard stories like this about the production crew around town as well. They filmed at a park near the house I grew up in a while back and the neighbors were pretty ticked at how it all went down.

I love the show, but I have no knowledge of the crew or how they present themselves while filming. That sucks, if so. I'm not so sure about the social ramifications that they brought up, though. It seems like that's presented as another reason after the financial implications are brought up, while they've seemingly never had issues with the content in the past

Show is hit or miss for me, but it's generally run dry. I don't know what it is, Fred Armisen has always seemed kind of pretentious to me.

This show has potential to be hilarious if they knew how to close out their sketches

Didn't realize Portlandia was still a show that exists. I never thought it was funny..

Good on these people for standing up for their business and their beliefs.

Hahaha every sketch show has that problem. For some reason, it's not easy to end a sketch.

For me, it's mostly a show that I have on in the background when I'm doing things at home. Occasionally there'll be a bit that makes me laugh, but it's like comedic white noise.

Love the show. The show actually made me decide to visit Portland. Not because I imagine it's like the show. It just put it on the map which combined with the fact it has the most breweries per person in the world makes me really want to go. But I'm from England so I don't know.

  19. Damn, didn't realize so many people disliked this show.

Love the show, but I also don't live in Portland. Kind of a dick move on the crews part to leave things a mess. I've worked on several sets before and like camping we always try to leave the place in better shape than it was when we arrived.

I dont think it's that they dont "get it"....it's just that it hits too close to home for some heh...and they're offended.

i’ve been meaning to tell you

I've seen the show one time, and it was a bookstore episode. I looked at my girlfriend and asked if they were making fun of trans people and she shrugged so I turned it off forever.

Well, either way it's their last season so that's a win-win for everybody.

Furthermore, are we getting any anew Sleater-Kinney anytime soon? Their last album has gained so many plays from me

    I don't like this show.

But I do think this position is a little less than admirable. This joke has been alive and well for 5 seasons, and for 5 seasons they didn't say anything. Now suddenly they do? Because - as they admit - they aren't making as much money as they'd hoped? As much as they have other complaints, the first thing is 'we don't make money,' which leads a person to believe that the further complaints wouldn't be an issue if they were making more money.

It sure seems like this isn't a principled stance as much as it's a financial one.

Just because he's dressed in drag doesn't mean they're making fun of trans people...

Also I like the show but that's about it. I'll watch it but it's not even in my top like 50 shows
