Coachella and Lolla have somewhat of a brand to upkeep, especially Coachella. In the 00's and early 10's it was inconceivable that a major pop star would headline. However, streaming changed a lot of listening consumption and the people behind the festival noticed that their audience who listened to indie rock also listened to a lot of mainstream pop thus why you have the likes of Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Beyonce who have headlined. Additionally, the whole premise of getting wasted for 3 days at festival really caters to the 16-25 crowd so the bookings need to be relevant and excitable to that demo first and foremost.

I think Lollapalooza has also struggled to sell out all days in recent years so I wonder if they scale back in years to come if they can't put together a killer lineup.

I also think the market saturation of music festivals has changed the landscape of booking as well

The bit that blows my mind is the capacity of those 16-25 year olds to have the money to fund a weekend like that. I remember having panic attacks over the money I spent to attend Fest in Gainesville when I was about that age... LOL

But yeah, I think the "indie-fication" of pop music or however you want to say it, definitely plays a factor. It's been interesting to see it all trickle down into the lower tier of the posters now too.

Yeah the cost is definitely eye-raising but a lot of young kids don't buy alcohol/concessions at these so it's really just the ticket cost and maybe a bottle of water or two.

As someone who goes to Coachella every year, there’s very few teenagers. 24-29 is the main range.

There's def not many kids/teens at Coachella, compared to Lolla, ACL, OSL, etc.

Coachella is close to $600/ticket after fees, flight could run you $300-400 (unless SoCal, then just the drive to the desert), and if you're looking for a hotel/rental property it's about $800-1000 for a bedroom for the duration of the fest. I don't know a ton of teenagers with $2,000 to drop on a festival.

While I agree that it makes sense for them to pivot to pop music, not sure an act with such a young fan base (like BP) is a great act to pull people to the desert, especially after they just wrapped US arena tour. A much smarter booking, along the same lines would've been Rosalia.

They were already touring with another drummer. But yeah, its weird they are announcing shows giveng the circumstances

Medusa and Liquor & Love Lost.

Wow. It would be great to hear those live. I’d also be interested in hearing Fifteen Fathoms, Counting. It was one of my most played back in ‘08 but it’s just a simple instrumental.

not sure about 2022’s Lolla but i was working press at that first post pandemic Lolla in 2021 and there were 100k people there every day, so it at least did really good that year

Would be weird to announce a tour with a date in less than 3 weeks lol

That would be interesting! I dont understand why Foo Fighters needs 3 guitars (no disrespect to any of them), so a change of dynamic like that would be cool

Sanguisugabogg have an announcement tomorrow and have been teasing a tour. Curious if they're also gonna be on Chaos and Carnage...

I assume they are, that album has a ton of hype

Suicide Silence is hyping a tour announcement tomorrow as well, I can’t imagine they are on it again.
