Marvel movies lead me to drink

  3. The MCU has undeniably permeated culture in many ways - but setting that aside, so many other movies and TV shows are so much more constantly talked about, dissected, referenced that didn’t gross as much money or didn’t have to wait for the technology to be there or require the brilliance of a self-proclaimed incomparable director.

Err well you see I obviously have a problem with Avatar though. I still had fun with some elements of the sequel and it’s better than the original, at least.

The MCU has arguably had the biggest impact on the film industry ever. Good and bad.

I don't understand the defensiveness when people point out Avatar's lack of cultural impact compared to its huge financial success. You can compare it to other films within Cameron's own filmography; The Terminator films are endlessly quoted and parodied, and Titanic was everywhere. It isn't a criticism of the first films quality, but rather how it seems to have come and gone. Absent the sequel, the argument would end much earlier.

I think the “lasting cultural impact” of literally everything has diminished significantly, and so the things that are *perceived* as having longevity are largely just the things that are constantly churning out new content to be consumed.

  7. I don’t know. This could be true of the MCU today and how they’ve serialized their stories across movies and shows they constantly churn out. But before that, the first Iron Man had a lasting effect on audiences.

The Sopranos ended in 2007 and even before The Many Saints of Newark it keeps new and existing audiences coming back.

Titanic came out in 1997 and people still talk about whether there was room for Jack on the door.

The Dark Knight came out a year before Avatar and has had much more of a cultural impact. There really isn't a famous quotable line or breakout character or endlessly rewatched scene in the original film.

“Cultural impact” these days is also largely measured in memes.

the blue people movie is dope me like a lot

  11. And to add to this, so much media is now marketed as having some level of cultural impact before it's even released that that most films don't live up to the expectations set for them and are inevitably lost to time

Plus no one in the United States political class right of center can claim to like Avatar when its message is so explicitly anti-dominionist and anti-capitalist. They can be all over a Thor movie or some dumb shit

Our national corporate media isn't going to bring up Avatar if they don't have to, except to make a joke about fonts

  13. Which is ironic because it would indicate that Avatar has actually had a lot of cultural impact; the film's absence from the cultural zeitgeist after it's release has been discussed pretty endlessly

Most Americans don't engage with the political messages of the media they consume. Look at what happens every time Rage Against the Machine says something totally in line with their politics and right-wingers get mad and say they wish they would stay out of politics.

Also, a lot of Americans can dismiss the genocide of Native Americans as a sad event but little else while simultaneously feeling bad for the Na'vi.

Way of Water is actually getting some praise from conservative brain rot people because it’s “a Hollywood movie that isn’t woke” since it has a strong father figure at the center of a family lol

That isn't the worst way to read the movie. The strong family unit, spiritual (although not Christian), defeats the man who doesn't seem to believe in anything except profit. If you watch a lot of right-wing media you discover that they think it is the liberals/left who are obsessed with profits above all else.

Am I the only person who thinks the opening of the extended version / director's cut of Avatar 1 is a better opening to the movie...? I understand the inclination to get to Pandora as quickly as possible, but I feel like the longer opening sets the world up better and makes you connect with Sam Worthington's LL Bean model main character at least a little bit. It's not like we don't end up spending enough time on the planet during the rest of the movie. It's only a handful of extra minutes and I feel like it really pays off. At the same time, I also think the movie is too long as it is - I just wish they cut some other stuff and kept that opening instead.

I can't remember what else was added / extended because it's been several years since I have watched either version, but I honestly liked the movie significantly better with that opening.

Saw this today in 3D as God intended.

I have nothing to add except they better release 3 in two years as promised, because I need MOAR.

I saw this again and it was a bad theater experience. Really dark and out of focus. It was CRISP the first time, and my wife and i took my dad who had nothing to compare it too (his 1st time) and his immediate complaints were quality of showing which was a bummer. Big city new theater vs small town old one. He still really enjoyed it, but didnt get the visual treat we wanted him to have.

I'm at dinner right next to a local movie theater and an entire table is trying to convince a guy that it was Sigourney Weaver as the adopted daughter. I'm fascinated how people can watch a 3 hour movie where everything is clearly explained and have no idea what's going on.
