    Player's Log: 3000th Duel.

I've finished the main game and I'm now doing the DLC, The Wise Ones, which is basically the second half of the game. You know how in Castlevania games you have to do something of importance to unlock the rest of the game and get the good ending? This is that.

I'm actually having a lot of fun with this game. I know I said before it's a bargain bin Metroidvania. I want to sort of amend that statement, as it does the game a disservice. Clearly a lot of thought was put into this game, although the aesthetic makes me think of MediEvil at best and a mobile game at worst.

That said, the game allows a lot of combat options and a healthy amount of opportunities to use them. You have your base character, and by killing enemies you earn Karma, which you can then use to either level your character or spend like money to upgrade your weapons and magic. You also have a skill tree you can invest in, and you have health potions and super moves at your disposal as well, with ways to improve on them.

Some of this feels familiar to me from Elden Ring, although this game came out two years ago, so maybe it's just borrowing from From in general. The rest is pure Castlevania.

There is a story going on, but it's mostly given to you through lore items, also similar to Elden Ring.

Anyway, I'm enjoying it, although I have to put a couple of caveats on this.

First, the game is difficult. In fact, before the "last boss", you basically have a boss rush of almost every boss you fought so far, which I think is absolutely mental. I've read from people that the DLC bosses are impossible. Before then you've got multiple segments involving every trope in the platformer handbook, from conveyer belts to disappearing platforms to crumbling platforms to etc.

I actually have no way of knowing how difficult the game is at this point, because after dying multiple times and having to replay entire map segments, I did some Googling and made a choice. I chose to invest in something called Aurora, from a website called Cheat Happens. I'd heard about "trainers" before, but never really paid much attention to them.

The way I see it is like this. I work during the week. I play games to relax. I don't have time to faff about with a game for weeks on end, and I have a lot of games I want to experience. If that means I have to turn on infinite health to get through a hard one, so be it. Reminds me of my childhood growing up with Game Genie on my NES.

The other way I see it is like this. I 100%ed Elden Ring. I have nothing to prove.

Honestly, until Nate started raving about Vampire Survivors, I had just dismissed it as one of a million similar shoot-everything-that-moves type games that I've seen (and own) quite a lot of.

I still kind of feel that way, but it's less than five bucks on Steam, so I've purchased it now. I don't know when I'll play it, but the option exists now.

Folks, help, I'm going down the retro grey market emulation handheld rabbit hole thanks to sites like RetroGameCorps and it feels like there's no coming back.

    Player's Log: 3000th Duel.

I'm getting closer to the end of the DLC. Maybe I'll finish it tomorrow. We'll see. I'm taking off work to go to the eye doctor, so I might have enough time to wrap this up.

Achievement-wise I've unlocked 31 of 59. I don't feel especially proud of that considering, but it is what it is. I don't think I'm going to get all the achievements though, as some of them require you to get items that not only don't exist until New Game +, but some of them don't exist until New Game +2. That's some wild fuckery.

I will give the game credit in one area, for doing something that I don't think I've ever seen in another Metroidvania, and it's super welcome. Whenever you see a chest or any other major point of interest, the game will mark it on your map. That way, if you need to come back to it later, you know exactly where it is! Fucking godsend.

Anyway, once I'm done with this, I'm not sure what I really want to do next. My intent I guess is just to keep moving down my library alphabetically for the moment and see what grabs my attention. I'm actually trying to whittle down my library, which is why I'm tending to go for the weirder lesser-known games.

What are you emulating and what are you emulating it on?

Ok, I just finished the demo for Forspoken

    Initial thoughts:
It’s fun and borrows from A LOT of games. Off the top of my head: AC, Tony Hawk/Sunset Overdrive, DmC, Monster Hunter. I am sure there are more.
I think that could also be a negative because the game is trying to do a lot. The graphics and camera angles leave something to be desired.

Lastly, from the little she spoke in the demo, the main character is insufferable and will get old very quickly.

The demo took about 45 minutes with a pretty cool bonus fight afterwards that reminded me of something in Monster Hunter or even Elden Ring.

I honestly haven't paid attention to this game at all, so I just read a brief bit about it, and this is an isekai? It's an isekai. They're making an isekai.

I don't know why I thought you watched anime, or at least would be familiar with the terminology. I can see you've never posted in the Anime Thread. My bad.

But yes, it's a very common thing in anime to have the main character come from "our world" and be sent to a completely other world to faff about.

In this case, she's a New Yorker who got dropped in a fantasy land.

Currently, NES/SNES/GB/GBC/GBA/Arcade/Genesis on a RG351MP, but I’ve been eyeing both the Miyoo Mini for something smaller and the Retroid Pocket 3+ to be able to do Dreamcast + GameCube.
