Hahah are we gonna have the art/artist breakdown this early (or late, seeing as how we finished up a massive album bracket a month or so ago)? Have we not crossed the bridge of acknowledging that artist can be horrible monsters who should rot for the rest of their miserable lives and also be able to say that they recorded good songs? If you're going down the "woof" road now, we have a pretty shitty rest of the tournament.

    EDIT:
In the thread for famous good guys, the Gallagher brothers of all people.

I mean, yeah, I absolutely think it should be part of the conversation for songs in the bracket with complicated legacies, and this isn't the first time I or others have brought it up. Hell, Pat brought it up for "Cover Me Up" just because there's a popular cover version of that song by a racist fuck. "Ignition" isn't in the bracket, so we can either have or not have that conversation here. I've always had a deep revulsion to that song and the way it was embraced as a "carefree pop jam" when it was not a secret what R. Kelly had been accused of or was doing out in the wide open. (And again, I also just think the song just sucks, so it's not exactly and art/artist argument for me. I think both the art and the artist are shit.)

I guess my question is more about where you are drawing the line for when we can/can't talk about the artistic merit of a song outside of the horrible things the artist did. There are artists in the bracket, that you and I both voted for, who have committed absolutely heinous acts and who have not been punished for them. Me saying that Ignition is a good song got a response out of you as if I was holding up a "Free R. Kelly" sign in the middle of the intersection. He's a piece of shit, a living monster who can rot away forever. He still made a song that I like.

You know that that's the way I feel about him, because I don't know anyone who feels differently, so why the bad faith response?

How is this even close? Should be Oasis in a landslide.

You're right, it was a bad faith response and I apologize. I tend to have a knee-jerk reaction to that song/R. Kelly in general, given that he is, in my mind at least, one of the big bads in pop music history. Scrolling through that list, it really struck me negatively to see that song there.

I don't have a perfect or even consistent answer for where I draw my lines. Sometimes, it's as simple as awareness. I didn't even know about the Oasis stuff you posted above. I guess all the more reason to talk about these things? I know I have a complicated relationship with "Since U Been Gone," for instance, because I both think it's a banger and hate Dr. Luke/have read stories about how miserable Kelly Clarkson was working with him.

Anyway, sorry for derailing the thread.

Might have voted Oasis if it was "Wonderwall". "Hey Ya" was everywhere, and was a radical departure from anything Outkast put out before.

  8. If Oasis wins by two votes, as it is right now, I will riot. #StoptheSteal

Champagne is so much better than Wonderwall, I do love both though

As a CS voter I'm 100% rooting for Hey Ya here now

still pissed about that kid who got banned (also was from new england, was here all the time around the site switch) telling me wonderwall was a joke and no one actually likes it earnestly in 2015 or whatever it was

Love both songs and wouldn’t be upset with either winning, but Champagne Supernova had a bigger and longer impact in my small bubble of existence so it got my vote

Also I wouldn't go to bat for Ignition now but hard to deny it was a hell of a bop. Much like Hey Ya and Yeah, that one was another that when it came on at parties and bars people would get hype as hell. It rightfully doesn't get that play anymore and I'm fine with it. It's still on my ipod but on the off chance it comes up on shuffle it's an autoskip for me. It was a party mood type of song before anyway, and now I'm old and don't party anymore so even if the crimes weren't there, I'd find little reason to revisit it personally.

Speaking of the Yeah discussion....Most of the older people in my life do know that one too. My 61 year old mother knows/likes Yeah haha.

I wasn’t arguing for its quality or inclusion. Just that it cleaned up on best-of lists for the 00s alongside Beyoncé and Hey Ya

imagine posting this, then posting a shit list of outkast songs that are better than Hey Ya, then going into the Oasis thread to ask for votes and it STILL only winning by 1 vote

    Sad!
