I really thought some corners of the film world would manage to get Paddington 2 on there.

Wanda and Touki Bouki were both on my radar before the list dropped, I just hadn’t gotten around to them yet. Cool to see them on here. I believe Wanda is a new addition, per this tweet:

I’ll also be the grump (like I usually am) and say there should be a 5-10 year limit before a film can make the list. I’m always against canonization too soon. The closest for me would be The Master. To be fair, though, I probably would’ve added it to my top 100 within 5 years

Maybe The Tree of Life is too new, but how do you omit The Thin Red Line or Days of Heaven? Both are cinematic landmarks.

I didn't realize they had doubled the number of participating critics for this list. In addition to the passage of 10 years of time, it is essentially a whole new group of voters.

Interestingly, I've seen 81 films on the new critics 100 list. Same as what I was at for the 2012 list!

I sat in silence for 5 minutes after Portrait of a Lady on Fire ended, I then leaned over to my wife and said “I think that might be the best movie I’ve ever seen”. I’ve seen it at least 5 times since, I still feel the same.

I somewhat agree, but there was a lot less film history in 1962. You are talking about basically half.

So many people telling on themselves with the new poll, I don’t know all the metrics of what is represented in the new poll and what is not but it’s very curious to me that within the Top 30 the biggest movers are 4 of the greatest feminist pieces of work in all of cinema (Jeanne Dielman, Daisies, Cleo from 5 to 7, and Portrait of a Lady on Fire) and now look at all the hand wringing that a “finger is on the scale”, lol please. If anything a finger has been lifted from the scale.

Someone else made the point that you have to justify these new films against those that didn't make it. Does anyone really believe that Get Out is better than Raging Bull?

clearly the people that voted for it.

I will have to watch Portrait sometime in the next month, but Parasite and Get Out don't even crack my top 250. Hopefully it is better.

Idk, it’s a snapshot of a moment and I’m glad Get Out is included. The poll is still only 100 films, that 100 is going to feel smaller and smaller with each passing decade. More room for complaining. I like challenging the canon. Get Out is deserving.

but also there's a lot of other films on the list I'd take off for Raging Bull instead of Get Out. everyone's going to have different opinions on the films included and not included which is why it's kinda weird that people are getting so bothered by a list like this.

not talking about anyone in this thread with that but I've seen a lot of people on Twitter genuinely angry about certain things which makes me laugh.

Maybe, or they forgot Raging Bull. You also wonder what people who didn't have either film would choose, and I really doubt it would be Get Out.

that's another point, the list wasn't worked on by all of them. it's just based on tallying everyone's votes so while something like Raging Bull or There Will Be Blood would have absolutely been voted ahead of Get Out if it was that kind of list, Get Out just happened to really connect with enough people to make this list.

It is the closest thing to a "film canon", so emotions can run high. It isn't the be-all, of course; I didn't start liking Vertigo more when it was the new number one.

Beyond my personal picks (my number one film is not on there at all), I wonder to what extent Jeanne Dielman makes cinephilia look as snobbish as people insinuate. It is a three and a half hour movie of a woman washing dishes and cooking meals. It is intentionally challenging and is going to put off a lot of people. Citizen Kane and 2001: A Space Odyssey are easy films to watch in comparison. If you are an aspiring film buff in your early twenties or so and start with Jeanne Dielman, is it going to put you off the project?

I didn’t even mention The Piano or Meshes of the Afternoon.
