I am a little confused by having two sets of two openers, so they're paying their openers to go on tour and play half the dates? What do they do the rest of the time? Play headline shows to recoup some merch sales?

It's a neat idea I guess, just seems odd

Is it being billed as a reunion?

Every interview and article I've read about it, they seem to be very adamant about not labeling it a reunion, so did something change?

Or they just take the day off? Not sure what the logistics are surrounding that.

honestly looking into it it varies by article

If the interviewer is talking to someone outside Pantera they usually call it a reunion (because Anselmo + Brown)

If they're talking to someone in Pantera they call it a tribute (because Wylde + Benante)

Yeah I presume so, I just can't imagine how much that must cost to take essentially 4 support bands out on tour and they only get to play half the shows. Then again I guess it is Metallica so hey maybe it's worth it for that alone.

Oh snap I was not expecting this! Song is really good. The tour being in the round is pretty sick too.

I'd be excited for this Pantera tribute if Phil wasn't a racist piece of shit.

    hmmm

Could've sworn I heard Sam Carter on a podcast years ago saying he didn't really like Metallica. Now being their support band is a dream come true.

Of course I might be misremembering and it's probably pretty cool supporting them even if you're not that into them so never mind.

Well, it's on the flyer as "Pantera" which to me is the furthest thing from what it actually is.

Ice Nine Kills and Five Finger Death Punch as openers is the definition of hell on earth.

I get that saying Pantera vs. Phil Anselmo, Rex Brown, and Friends: A Tribute To Pantera can carry different layers of meaning, but to me it's really a very small thing that doesn't belie their intent.

If you feel differently, more power to you.

To each his own. To me, it just feels a bit greasy. Phil toured with his band, The Illegals, and played a full set of Pantera songs and it was billed as such. This seems more like a cash grab using the original name.

Honestly, I'm of the mindset in general that band members can do what they want with what they've built, so if they wanted to call this Pantera officially and roll on, to me that's their business and their right.

That's not to say I don't understand the other side of things and how fans feel, but it's not up to the fans to decide what they do with their legacy, it's theirs.

And in any case, they've been bothered about doing this for years by fans (and the media) anyway, so they're pretty much fucked either way. They might as well have fun with it.

I'd tend to agree if half the band wasn't dead and hadn't adamantly denounced the idea prior to dying

I just realized that those tour dates stretch from 2023 to 2024. So 22 dates per year.
Given their age and the insane amount of energy it takes to play this kind of music, that makes sense. I always wonder how much longer they can go on playing thrash metal.

That does complicate the issue, certainly, because there is an air of "they can't object" to this project. Kind of like the reformed Static-X, which is very similar to this in a lot of ways.

But, they are doing this with the blessing of the Abbott estate, from what I've read. Not the same thing, clearly, but they're also seemingly not trying to be underhanded about it.

And also, I can understand how upsetting it might be to have created something and not be able to use it or celebrate it. It's why I don't begrudge Billy Corgan when he brought back Smashing Pumpkins or similar scenarios.

Let me be clear, Phil Anselmo is an asshole and a moron. But I also think he's got a right to perform as Pantera, especially if he has the backing of the Abbott estate behind him.

But, I do still understand this not sitting right with other people. It's tough with a band that both invokes strong feelings and one tied to such tragedy.

The Band was the Abbotts though. They created it, were there for every single moment of it, and brought it it's success. Phil joined after what, 2 albums? If he wants to celebrate his music with them, do them at your solo shows, but touring as Pantera is like Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony touring as Van Halen.

I don't know if that's the same thing, but if Hagar and Anthony get the blessing of everyone else and their estates to do it, then more power to them.

I do love the idea of the No Repeat Weekend. They've got the catalog for it. Wish more bands would be open to it.

The song is alright? I think people have such a low bar for this band that anything that doesn't actively suck shit is a success.

The production is too clean, James' voice sounds kind of lame, but at least Lars sounds competent?
