Rodgers/Packers offense hasn't looked great in a while now, it's not just one or two games.

Stafford, Ryan, Alex Smith...they are all on that blurry line of being franchise QBs, yet, if a better option came along, you'd take it. That said, Id say that makes them average by definition.

It's really not the same story at all but okay. If you watch the games his decision making really hasn't been bad. His first two picks were thrown slightly behind Lee, tipped, and luckily caught. If he threw picks because of inaccuracy last year you'd have a point but his picks last year were almost entirely bad reads, this year it's been two poor throws (1 GB 1 SD), a man coverage CB coming way off one route to intercept another receiver who was ahead of his man (SD, and Bortles was throwing downfield because it was 2 min drill and we were down 21-0 before half), a ball tipped at the line, and an amazing backward leaping one handed grab Mosley took out of AROB hands (these were the highly improbable BAL interceptions but they happened anyway, is what it is.)

Im not saying hes playing well but youd also be wrong to argue that he still has major issuss with decision making. None of his picks were poor decisions, and the sloppy execution on 4 of those had a lot to do with 3 defenders in Bortles face. He has even more passing volume than last year and despite an unusual number of amazing plays defenders have made on the ball, his mistakes and poor decisions have actually gone down. You see more checking it down under pressure, more attacking the safety rather than the safety attacking him, etc. I'm actually a little concerned that he seems to be over thinking his ball placement which was more consistent last year than this year so far -- but the good thing is he's not having the same bonehead problems that come from not understanding the game.

Losing is losing but the reasons matter in terms of how we are going to move forward. Our biggest problem remains our OL and (yeah I can't deny it at this point) coaching. We cant run AT ALL, both Yeldon and Ivory are getting hit at or behind the line more than half our running plays, we can't stay disciplined pre-snap to avoid penalties, we cave far too easily from bull rushes and allow too many free rushers on stunts... because of those things almost every 3rd down we face is 10+ yards, which makes Bortles have to sit in the pocket way too long, while we are falling behind and the other team is obviously blitzing. This is why, despite clear improvement in terms of going through reads, Bortles can't do shit. A bad OL makes any QB underperform and he has had that problem at an extreme for his entire career so far (they're playing worse this year than last year even.)

I'm all for Les Miles or Mora Jr, thanks to Matt for covering the bases while I was gone. We still have no OL which is a coach killer no matter what regime or roster he has... and our defense isn't even CLOSE TO the standards Bradley set in TB and SEA so if he can't even implement the things that are supposed to be his strong suit then I'm completely out of ways to defend him.

He has been less accurate this year. He's not hitting ARob front or back shoulder as well as he did last year and he has overthrown two perfect long TD opportunities in both the Packers and Ravens game that could have flipped the momentum of the game. Higher completion percentage is almost absolutely attributable to making safer decisions on the regular.

If I were to sum it up he is a smarter QB than in 2015, most definitely... but the pressure and anxiety of having twice the responsibility in the offense this year, is affecting his execution, and so far it looks like he's more accurate passer when he can just go out and throw without over thinking. Hopefully that can be resolved with more time because he needs to be able to do both (play calm AND play smart) to take the next step.

  11. I usually give Gettleman a lot of praise on here but he gets a giant F for his most recent offseason.

I will never understand why he let Norman walk. We weren't in any cap trouble, cornerback was already a weaker position with him here, and he was coming off an all-pro season. He was a big part of the defense's personality (I know that sounds like made up football talk but it's true). It changed our entire approach to the draft because we literally only had Bene Benwikere and Robert McClain at CB. Bradberry has been impressive but all of this has been completely unnecessary. If you don't want to pay him long-term, fine. But why not just use him under the tag for a season rather than create a giant hole in the defense? Norman was a game changer. And we let him go when there was no reason as to why we couldn't keep him for this season.

And then there's the Vernon Butler pick. He's a great player. I'm not mad about the talent. But we have both Star and KK for at least this season and next (5th year option on Star, franchise tag on KK can both be used if needed). We also had decent backups behind them. I do not understand why he continues to ignore OT and DE. We went into the offseason with an overall young team and with talent at most positions. We had very few needs. We entered the season with the same needs and a new weakness at CB.

Gettleman once said he doesn't like to draft/develop players and then see them "graduate" and go play for another team. Yet it seems like he refuses to pay the players he drafts/develops. The KK contract talks haven't gone anywhere and he's already used a first round pick as insurance for him. He is eventually gonna have to give out some big deals rather than drafting the same positions over and over and relying on hitting on that pick every time. I understand the BPA philosophy but you can't say that's your philosophy and then go draft 3 CBs in consecutive picks. Keeping Norman would have not only made us better this year but would have completely changed his mindset during the draft. That move was a huge mistake.

Yep, steal. Especially since they already had two good corners. A rare good move by their garbage gm.

Well so if he continues to play like he has been, regardless of the reason. Are you ready to pay him in the 16-20M range long term in the next year or so?

I'm at 80/20 in terms of confidence in him. Turnovers are a big deal and I'm not downplaying that but when that's less than 20 snaps out of 600 dropbacks in a season, sometimes they can be flukey and not tell the whole story. Last year they were not but this year so far they are and on a per snap basis Bortles has gotten markedly better each year, like surprisingly better.

What you said about pressure applies to literally everyone BUT him. We had an abysmal running game. The pressure is on Yeldon and Ivory and our line. Bortles showed he can put up great numbers last year and lead. He needs to play smarter and better. Period.

Is it draft season yet for my Browns? Man, fuck our team haha. Between the revolving door at qb, the rollerskating philosophy of blocking on our o-line, to the softest of pass coverage, I am so tired of this team's ineptitude. At least this iteration has viable excuses: youngest team and laundry list of injuries. As the story goes, wait til next year.

He would fit perfectly in the sense that his name is Jim Bob Cooter and this is the south.
Either way, this is the one time we can afford to settle for Les.

No coach has more players in the NFL except maybe Nick Saban. I could go on about NFL ready talent but the problem always was one thing - QB. Look up the biggest QB bust of all time. Then look up which QB has the worst record all time. The answers are two of the three QBs Les Miles has put into the league. Why didn't the offense work? The best he could recruit at the QB position was a squirrel.
