They're a one hit wonder by most measures tbh. They had a few other buzzing singles but nothing else that really made a cultural impact. Nothing else was a hit

  11. Yeah, but that doesn't really mean it had any kind of impact at all, especially like "The Middle" or even "Sweetness" had.

I mean, they had modern rock hits, but that's not really the same thing as a pop hit. They're a one-hit wonder as far as Top 40 is concerned.

He did on Invented as well, so while it is rare for him to say it, it's not exactly unreal.

Yeah I'm actually surprised that some people here are shocked they're considered a one hit wonder, they essentially are

As far as mainstream media or pop culture goes, Jimmy Eat World is the definitive one-hit wonder. Start singing "It just takes some time..." and half the western population can sing along. No matter what other catchy tunes or brilliant records JEW ever puts out, they'll always be that band that sings "The Middle". Which to me unfortunately comes down to marketing - they've written better and catchier songs since, and hardly anyone knows that.

I think it also has to do with the current state of what "popular" music is. Back then people loved the catchy pop-punk hits, but now most people are looking at the pop/rap hits instead. I also don't think there are many radio stations now that play music like this, unless you've got satellite radio. At least not around me, but I live in the bible belt so that might explain it.

I agree for the most part, but I wouldn't call them the "definitive" one-hit wonder. While I agree that they had one massive hit, you could play some other songs and at least people will recognize them. When I think of a definitive one-hit wonder, I think of Eagle Eye Cherry, Harvey Danger, etc. No one would be able to say they recognized a single song beyond their one hit if they primarily listened to top 40.

Pretty sure this is the definitive one-hit wonder.

The definitive one-hit wonder is almost certainly something from the 80s or 90s. I actually don't think there's much argument for it being anything that isn't the Macarena.
