Looks like bigger operations will be happening near Kherson soon

Interesting and perhaps more reason to believe that maintaining the land bridge to Crimea is Russia's main priority at the moment

Damn, Xi is making Putin sleep on the couch tonight!

We’ll see if this stands if push comes to shove between the people of China and the people of Taiwan.

I think this has been going on the entire time, honestly. There's not really any good reason to make something like that public at this point though, from anyone's perspective other than Russia's. Sorta like Macron saying "France will not use nuclear weapons over Ukraine" at the point in time when he did - it may be true but saying it publicly when he did was foolish and unhelpful to anyone other than Russia.

So armchair generaling here but if Ukraine is able to retake Kherson and push the Russians back to the other side of the Dnieper River and hold the line there, the next eventual step would be an offensive on the Zaporizhzia line south to reach the Black Sea at Melitopol effectively cutting off the southern and eastern fronts right?

Yeah I think an effort to get to Melitopol would be the next target; Crimea is a whole other beast that will take a lot more resources, so cutting the eastern and southern fronts in two would (to us at least) seem like the most logical choice

I think the logical step for Ukraine is just to hold the line in the east, retake the whole of Kherson and Zaporizhzia Oblasts, get somewhere close to resembling pre-invasion lines, and just figure out what to do with Donetsk, Luhansk, and Crimea after that.

Those three would be entirely different animals for the Ukrainians to retake due to the pro-russian sentiment in those regions. The locals would not be so much on their side there.

I read today that Ukraine has liberated 50% of the territory Russia attempted to take since February 24th.

A lot of people might not like this but if Ukraine can get back to the pre-invasion lines, and then strike a deal that cedes Crimea, Donetsk, and Luhansk to Russia I think that's the most realistic outcome where they can end the war while being able to claim a victory. That I think is 100% achievable within a year if things keep going the way they are.

Attempting to go past that and re-take those three territories they lost in 2014 though i think would be where they'd get bogged down. Even if it is eventually achievable it would take years more and costs ten of thousands or even hundred of thousands more lives..

Wait, who are the “rebellions” here?

If you're referring to him mentioning a "cost of living rebellion", he means countries like, say, the UK where energy bills are going through the roof, inflation is spiralling and living standards are declining, and the government is blaming it all on the war in Ukraine. If people can be swept up in a patriotic fervor, the logic is that maybe they won't rebel or protest against their own governments
