I’m pretty sure we had this discussion on the old site and I was told to buy the records you like right now and THEN get the player later. I’m glad I went that route. Was able to snag some represses in 2013/4 during that time.

hmm, that doesn’t sound familiar but I can take another look. Most common issue online seemed to be mismatches in resistance or watts or whatever between devices but doesn’t feel like that’s something that would crop up overnight.

issues aside I picked up a few things yesterday:
MCR’s The black parade is dead
    Novelists FR
Senses fail’s hell is in your head
    The 1975’s being funny

That's what I did. I had casually bought a few lps in 2006-2007. Jimmy "Clarity" first press, Death Cab "Transatlanticism" and "The Photo Album" first press among a few others.

It wasn't until I saw SoCo "Leaving Through the Window", Finch "What It Is to Burn" and Silverchair "Frogstomp" in 2012-2013 I actually got a player to listen to them as they were just more art and collectibles prior.

I initially told myself "only buy your favorite albums". That went out the window. My wife was curious as to the "median value" of collection this morning. She made a joke and said we could do an extension on our house with that money. I made the joke that she'd probably make me subject of a future episode of Dateline haha.

  4. Usually, I buy a record, listen to it once within the week of getting it, put it on the shelf, and rarely go back to it, haha.

But there’s definitely days where I’m in the mood to listen to records, so I’ll put on a handful. Generally though, I listen to Spotify because I can jump around songs and albums easier.

  5. See one of the appeals of physical media to me is precisely that it's harder to jump around. Forces me to engage with and focus on an album in a way that I don't always with streaming

  6. Totally. That is the biggest perk with physical media, for sure. But I have to be in the mood for a full album. When I listen to music the most, I’m usually in the car, or while I’m working. And while I’m working, I’m constantly pausing and stopping the music when I need to engage with people or focus.

but yeah, at the end of the day, I listen to a vinyl record maybe once a week, on average.

  7. Fair enough, I get it. I also have to work in an office (boo!) and it's not really practical for me to listen to music at work so besides driving/exercising most of my music consumption occurs when I'm at home in my living room where all my records and system are anyway

Now I will say this: trying to flip a record while holding a baby is a challenge haha, a hidden benefit of streaming

  8. I bet I’ve listened to side A of my records at least three times more than their other sides. Haha.

I almost exclusively listen to music in album form, so vinyl appeals to me in that way.

Dang, Merch Bar got me again with their sale. I snagged a bunch of early Green Day up to Warning for good prices. And I snagged Paramore’s All We Know and Brand Nee Eyes.

I think most, if not all of it is back ordered and will take weeks for all of it to come. But the prices were too good. Also, all but All We Know are just black, but I don’t really care about that. I’m just psyched to snag Warning and Kerplunk! And not $50 or more.

real talk though: i've heard horror stories about ordering through MerchBar. is it actually worth it?

My order from like a month ago had zero issues. Ordered Dookie through there back in May and no issues. So, all good for me.

They lost a record a I ordered but to be fair they shipped it from Australia. They did refund it.

I’ve ordered once and it never shipped. I had to email them to cancel it

  20. I’ve done multiple big orders from them, zero complaints. Great place to get standard pressings of things you wanna check off your list, especially since stuff is often steeply discounted

    u wut m8?

I placed two orders. Both never shipped and had to be cancelled. Items were in stock when I ordered, but went on backorder like a week or so later. Emailed about them and they said I could wait and it 'might' come back in stock or just cancel. Felt like a scam, so I have tried to avoid Merchbar as a result.

Meant to reply to you over the weekend, but here's my 2 cents.
The whole recommendation on a turntable thing really comes down to 2 things-
    1) How much "sound" difference do you want to try and get?
    2) What's your budget?

If money is no object, i would recommend starting with the standard Pro-ject turntable or a Rega Planar. I think pro-ject debut carbon is a fantastic entry-level turntable with the first glimpse of audiophile quality. It's what I've got and i love it.

I think the U-Turns are pretty solid and have a few friends happy with theirs. I like that you can customize so much and get exactly what you want for in look, style, and performance. I feel like the long-standing, classic standard turntable has been the Audio Technica LP120. Both of these options are going to be around half the cost of a pro-ject debut or rega Planar 1 or 2.

You can still luck out with some solid turntables in the $100-200 range, but most of them are rough. Biggest thing that helps with surface noise and taking care of your records on the platter is a counterweiught. Gotta make sure that your tt has one and you set it up correctly.

This user base has always struck me as full-album listeners for the most part, which is rare in this day and age. That definitely plays a part in the vinyl appeal for me. Been collecting since 2010 (bought the first Cities pressing at my first RSD, so the repress last week brought that memory back) and I've discovered a bunch of music in the process. My favorite way to listen to music! Love checking into this thread and see what ya'll are hyped about and thanks for all the hot tips on deals and represses along the way.
