This is a fun question: what's the biggest surprise that's ever happened at a concert you've attended? For me, it was maybe waiting in line for death cab and being asked by a random person with a clip board who I was there to see. After responding with dcfc, she asked me to follow her. I was brought to a room with about 10 other people and we were able to watch death cab's sound check, meet the band, get autographs. It was wild.

Just glad I didn't answer "frightened rabbit." This is the only scenario where death cab was the correct answer ha.

Krist Novosic joining the Foo Fighters 20yrs to the day since Nevermind was released at their show in Buffalo back in 2011.

He came out and did Skin and Bones with them, it was quite surreal to see 2/3rd of Nirvana up there (and Pat!).

seeing the foo fighters at metro in Chicago in 2017. they played for 3 hours and about 3/4 of the way through the setlist they stopped going of the set list and played a bunch of random shit

also meeting zack from rise against back in 2019 walking down the streets of chicago before their show

not entirely a surprise, but when i saw Paper Route and HalfNoise play in 2013, i was let into the venue super early because i knew the owner, and got to meet both PR and Zac Farro, in addition to hearing PR soundcheck one of their more underrated gems, You Kill Me (they cut it from the set though).

Just remembered another one. I went to see straylight run, northstar, hot rod circuit, and say anything in 2004. The venue they booked was so small that they pulled in audible and all played intimate acoustic sets. It was so cool.

I don’t mean this in an insulting way to mr chylak but the idea that any Taylor sales performance is a surprise is some real “the greatest trick the devil ever pulled…” stuff haha. That’s the amazing thing about her marketing and PR, she sells herself as the underdog while being literally the biggest American artist in the world without a close second and we all eat it up.

If there’s a part of the sales figures that surprises me, it’s why this one in particular? I wouldn’t have thought this was the most anticipated of the post 1989 albums. But it sounds like that has to do with some rule changes around what does/doesn’t count.

I think it's definitely surprising. We're talking about an artist having the best sales week of her career 16 years and 10 albums into her career. In a market where it is almost impossible to clear 1 million copies, she not only hit that mark but wildly exceeded it. The surprise to me isn't that this album did incredibly well. Taylor is obviously one of, if not the, biggest stars in the world. It's just how far past her own ridiculous success this album has gone.

I had tickets for the London Bon Iver show the day before this one (they were playing a few nights), and I skipped it. I am thanking my lucky stars that she came out on the Wednesday and not the day I was supposed to go. There would've been no coming back from that for me.

Missing my overall point, there's no other artist that quite transcends generations and pop culture like she does in an inoffensive way that still has children listening.

Maybe I'm just naive but like at some point u have enough money right??? I get that the album sales gives her the legacy and accolades she wants, but the ugly picture frame that was in the merch store like rly?? Hope she's playing the long con and she has a secret plan to save the riches up to buy out the other capitalists and dismantle them to save the environment or something lol. This goes for any filthy rich person.

none of us know how much it costs to build a death ray and take over the world , I do wonder if she has to approve the merch and if so how does she do it and not be like this is awful

Lol it kills me because all stans pick and choose what their fave has control over. If it sucks or comes off bad or greedy or out of touch it's "well she doesn't have time to approve or research every little thing! She has people for that!" But if it does well it's "yas queen is in charge of every single facet of her career because she's a girl boss pioneer!"

Merch seems like a standard thing for an artist to have control over, but she does do a LOT of drops so idk

Stan culture has prevented me from getting into so many pop stars. I enjoy the music but the fandom is gross.

I get annoyed by them but also too into it. Like how I imagine some people feel about the Bachelor lol. Annoyed but I'm addicted and can't look away!

If we don’t get a Midnights jockstrap like Gaga did with Chromatica, it’s a shame.

There have been no meaningful Billboard rule changes since folklore, and if anything it’s gotten harder to sell like this. I’ve spent a fair amount of time talking with people who weigh in on her merch and music sales strategies and I’m telling you that they’re surprised too.
^^^ this guy gets it. (Sorry I freak you out tho)

There are very, very few kids at my high school that care about Taylor Swift haha. I assume that goes for a lot of Philadelphia. Not sure if younger kids are the demographic she reaches anymore
