  1. So, my friend and I really liked The Blair Witch. There was definitely some nervous perspiration going on.

I watched the first ep of The Exorcist. Nothing amazing, but it had a couple moments. There's potential.

My friends hadn't seen Deathgasm before so I rewatched it with them last night. I seriously can't recommend that movie enough.

finally watched the blair witch project and yep, it's pretty much the only good found footage film. would have liked a glimpse of the witch though.

REC 1&2, Unfriended, Cloverfield and V/H/S are all at least as good as The Blair Witch Project

The Visit deserves a mention imo. Creep is really good too.

PA, Trollhunter, As Above, Sacrament... I do agree BW is the best, it's a sub genre I enjoy

Yes, that movie terrified me. And I forgot about the Last Exorcist, that was swell.

ehhhh I think there were some good and interesting elements to REC 1, Unfriended, and VHS. but ultimately the fact that they came way after Blair Witch Project means that i have a lot more respect and tolerance for the BWP than the rest. like, only one of those movies was significantly and culturally influential, so even if they're all about the same "quality" i'm way more likely to want to watch the one that started all of this than the ones that ultimately are fairly rehashy or at least not good enough for me to love.

but i did like how Unfriended handled character actions through technology and VHS had some really unique plots!

Not a true horror film by any means, but The Good Neighbor was a really fun watch. Rotten Tomatoes is really beating the shit out of it for some reason.

I could just about understand someone saying that if they saw The Blair Witch Project back in 1999 before all these other movies were even made, but it seems like a weird view for you to take, as I'm presuming you saw the other films before you saw The Blair Witch Project. Personally I'm not worried at all about what is or isn't "culturally significant", I judge films based on how much I enjoy them, and I definitely enjoy those films I listed at least as much as The Blair Witch Project, some even more so.

oh it's not necessarily a common way of thinking, but part of what i like doing when i consume art is understand its cultural place and how it's influenced its medium and other media. so that influences the merits i see in BWP versus the others. i didn't mean to say they're objectively worse or anything, just that i appreciate BWP in a different way and on a different level than i can the other films, even if i don't particularly love any of them.

I've been thinking. Kevin Williamson really needs to bring back the 90's slasher.

That would mean critics are beating the shit of it, not critics, as they only compile and report their opinions objectively

  18. no way is blair witch project the best found footage film and no way is unfriended "at least as good as it" imo

Unfriended, I went in wanting to like it and thought it was godawful

which found footage films would top your list?

  21. that's a good question. no doubting blair witch project's inventiveness and influence, but i feel as though the medium has been done better since then. lemme think on it haha

Blair Witch is probably the best found footage film. I don't remember a film that's come out since that carried the same cultural weight in terms of horror. Paranormal Activity? Maybe?

I really need to buy REC 1, 2, and 3. I originally watched it online but for some reason whenever I try to watch it now it's all dubbed and I am not here for that and need subtitles.

I watched it earlier this year on HBO and thought it was interesting in what it accomplished in its format. I did feel out of sync considering it was marketed towards more tech-savvy teens. I'd probably dislike it more if I saw it in theaters.

i thought it was neat without being too gimmicky, and i appreciated how much thought they put into how the main character interacted with her computer screen (seeing her hesitation in how she typed, rephrased things, etc). but ultimately it was still a little too weak on the plot to pull it all together for me
