I was wondering if it was still Chibnall because the episode was at least partially understandable. I was so lost during Flux.

I haven't been keeping up with the last few seasons but is looks like the new season is premiering in 2023 on Disney+ which is interesting

I don't understand how they've let the scheduling get so weird. Just 6 episodes, spread at strange intervals over 2 years...

Didn't realize this was even coming out until I saw the big spoiler on Twitter. But I thought it was a good episode, even if it was a little long for me (not that it wasn't justified, just a personal problem lol). I appreciated that they got so many people from Jodie's years brought in. Got a bit emotional at her farewell, which I wasn't really expecting.

I honeestly think I'd be pretty burnt out on it if we got a full season every year still. It always feels like an event when there are new episodes now.

  6. Still haven't watched the last Jodie special (hopefully this week), but I'm excited that the show will be on Disney+ going forward. This and Better Call Saul were the last two shows I was regularly buying season passes for.

Except, you just pointed out that it doesn't feel like an event because this single episode slipped out without you noticing. :p

Not that I'm actually mocking you for that, because I had exactly the same thing. I saw nothing about it at all until the day after, when they had the big spoiler as the headline on my homepage. It felt like such a random time to drop it, particularly with there being such a huge gap until the next 3 specials are coming out.

I thought the same, either Doctor Who is no longer in the zeitgeist or I'm not paying attention since I haven't been watching the show

Well that's fair lol but I mean event in a personal way as in it feels a lot more exciting to me personally, more so than a big societal thing haha

apart from John Hurt yup he is. and he is ROCKIN it too

btw can't blame anyone for not knowing this was on, it feels like they barely promoted it at all. RTD is already doing the press run hyping up the 60th a year in advance and this episode got one trailer two weeks ago and nothing else. so weird

As much as I hate the fact that I'm a slave to the Mouse, I am relieved that I no longer have to sit through BBC America's outrageous commercial breaks.

I think the move to Disney+ will be huge for the show because it’s a much wider audience that I think fits better than HBO Max, where the show never appeared on my front page until this week, and you know Disney will promote the crap out of it once it moves and when new episodes air. That paired with a great jumping on point for new fans and people who’ve fallen off, I think we may see a big resurgence in popularity

Thoroughly enjoyed the episode. Had a good tear up at the regeneration as I always do. Really wish that surprise at the end hadn’t been spoiled for me, as that would have been a hoot to experience.

The Yaz and Doctor (non-)resolution was the biggest letdown. They could retcon a fix sometime.

Ya I definitely agree with this. If they hadn’t explicitly made it a romantic thing in the last episode I would’nt have minded but it felt like they just abandoned the whole thought

Apparently this episode has been done for a while, but BBC asked for an extra special this year so they made Sea Devils after this one was already done. My guess is they didn’t really decide to address The Doctor & Yaz until making Sea Devils and that was the last to film.

Do people dislike him? Feel like he’s close to the consensus fav doctor

  21. I think a few pages back people were not keen on him

I think just about everyone enjoys Tennant, but the choice to return to him and delay Ncuti is the part people are questioning. That may be alleviated after we actually see the story they tell with both being a part of it, though.

Tennant is a great actor, he does phenomenal work in Broadchurch and Jessica Jones just to name a few, but I don't love his work in DW a lot of the time. the characterisation of 10 is... weird, imo, it's like they drew up a baseline of "he's arrogant, self-obsessed and reckless" and then like forgot to develop it for most of his run. I don't mind a less likable Doctor if it's written with nuance, late 11 and early 12 are great examples, but 10 is kind of unwatchable sometimes because they don't seem interested in really getting below the surface of it, at least not before stuff like Midnight/The Waters of Mars which is way too late. and Tennant while still good kind of sits in the same range a lot of the time because there's not much development happening, so he's not really using his considerable range over a nearly 4-year run (seriously, how many times can I watch the dude say "I'm so sorry" before I start to tune out)

all that said there was an undeniable charge to seeing him rock up again (although the clothes regenerating bothers me beyond belief lmao) and I have faith that RTD knows what he's doing here

I think 10 has some really good stories and Tennant probably could have done a good job with even better writing, but the god complex around him vibes me out. Just constantly having characters talk about how smart / handsome / special / better he is feels really gross often.

EDIT: this is why Waters of Mars is so good
