It's why I was so shocked at Tom leaving when he did. They seemed to be at the peak of their musical powers and were fulfilling what the members wanted in terms of the type of direction they were heading in. Tom wanted to write more darker, grandiose music and that's kinda where the band was heading?

As per that big interview with Mark (circa 2005/2006?) - Tom was burned out. The band was getting bigger, getting offered bigger tours, longer runs, and Tom had a toddler at home. He wanted a band on his own terms, enter AVA.

Also watched the doco this morning on my commute to work. Despite not having seen it before, it gave me a lot of nostalgia for a time when I spent all day during my teenage summers absorbing everything from this band.

You can very much tell they were in a transitional point here. Imagine being new fathers, with an album that's taking over the world, where your full-time job playing in a punk band is becoming more job/business than fun. The exhaustion, missing home and unsure of what to do at these massive crossroads would be so challenging.

Jason, with all your knowledge that we as fans aren't always necessarily privy to, were you aware that such documentary existed? Thanks.

  5. I've known about this fabled footage Estevan Oriol had for a long time, but didn't know it was ever even roughly put together.

I guess we'll never know the true extent for what the documentary was "supposed" to look like, but I'll take this gem of nostalgia.

As much as it “seemed” like Tom was the one that caused the breakup, you can definitely feel that they all would have benefited from a break at this point when you watch this documentary. I’m sure Mark and Travis didn’t want to ruin their momentum by forcing a break/hiatus, but it might have done them some good in the long run.

I don’t know though. Tom seemed to use the hiatus to reinforce his belief that he was better off without blink so maybe things would have basically ended up the same anyway.

To me it all looks like despite the trials and tribulations of touring life, they were optimistic for the future, especially Tom. Obviously there was footage that not used that could have reflected badly on them, but if you had just discovered the band, you'd have no idea from watching this documentary that there was any friction or bad blood between them.

It's crazy how it took 17 years for them all to finally align, and (hopefully!) now be at a point where they can record, tour, and have fun as grown men, with adult children, and end their legacy on a great note.

I really do hope this reunion, and their work together this time sticks. As per Jason's newsletter recently, there's something about the 3 of them and their chemistry that's undeniable.

I can’t stop listening to the new song. I LOVED the matt era, but something about hearing mark and Tom trading vocals in a new song I never thought I’d hear again just hits right

I heavily enjoyed watching this today instead of working. Just brought pure joy seeing them together at that time, knowing where they are today.

  15. Ok, now that I finished that (what a trip!) the copy of UC2 I have on Plex is in 480p. Is there a better rip of that anywhere that anyone's seen around? I have UC1 in 1080, but for some reason the UC2 I have is straight postage stamp stuff.

  20. The source from the DVD is 480 at best though. Just looking for a nicely uprezzed one?

  21. Ah. Didn’t know if they ever had it anything else. That’s annoying.

  22. Absolutely. I’m with ya. If your 1080 UC1 looks good though, might be a similar viewing experience uprezzing UC2. Most of it was likely shot on HVX100s which is SD anyway. I remember we shot a project in college (2005-ish) in HD and the professor got mad at us. Haha

  23. I’ll have to check. Haven’t watched in years. Downloaded it for preservation. I’ve got the OG DVDs somewhere around here.

Will never happen, but a dude can dream.

A blu-ray/4K box-set of UC1, UC2, and any cutting room floor docos, all music vids, plus a 2022 reunion doco (studio time/interviews/etc.)
