I'm seeing a lot of talk about what the various reactions and responses will and should and need to be if Russia hits Ukraine with tactical nukes. It definitely feels like something has shifted, or people in the know know something is coming. I hope I am wrong.

I don't even understand the strategy of using tactical nukes right now from Putin's / Russia's perspective, unless he's going to use hundreds of them all down the front line... Even that doesn't seem like a very effective strategy given how the front line is so fluid and contested. It's not like there's *one spot* where Russia just needs to break through a line and then Ukraine would be finished.

I can't see him crossing the nuclear threshold just a little bit. I think if and when he decides to cross that line it's going to be high yield and a strategic target, i.e. a city. My guess would be Kyiv or a NATO capital. I think the point would be to escalate so strongly that the other side needs to back down out of fear of their actions contributing to bringing about the end of human civilization if they do not.

I just do not see the psychological impact from a low yield "tactical" nuke, or some kind of nuclear demonstration somewhere, being very high at all, while at the same time, both of these options have a very high likelihood of catastrophic consequences back towards Russia itself, entirely separate from any sort of nuclear retaliation back at them.

If any tactical nukes are used at all, it'll just escalate from there and then we're all fucked.

I think it'll still take a really long time for that to actually happen

Of course it hasn't been under their control for 8 years; Russia illegally stole it from Ukraine. And Russia forces have been performing so utterly terribly these last several months, losing an ungodly amount of equipment, and soldiers (at a much higher rate than Ukraine), that it's just a matter of time before Ukraine pushes them out. How you can't see the reality of what's happening on the ground there, and the support they're getting, is beyond me. Every single military analyst that exists see the total destruction of Russian forces in Ukraine coming

Every single military analyst said this war would be over in March, then May, then shortly after the first HIMARS were delivered etc etc etc.
Russia was supposedly running out of missiles and men after the first few weeks.

You might need to check your sources on this.

the longer the war the better, the more we can fund arms manufacturers, and bleed Russia. It's a win, win.

best part, we're definitely unequivocally morally in the right this time, definitely, for real.

and there will be noooooo blowback, babyyyyy.
