Every Matchbox Twenty album is worthwhile, without exception. Can’t say the same for Thomas’ solo career…

I don't know about Matchbox being on Radiohead-level, but Matchbox Twenty was one of the first bands I bought a CD of and they'll always hold a special place in my heart.

That said, I think Rob Thomas' solo career had too much of an influence on their last album, North. There were a few traces of the old band on the album, but a lot of that album was not really what I was wanting or hoping for from a new Matchbox album.

Having their vinyl box set has really reminded me how much I love that band and their records, especially the first three. Supposedly they’re working on a new one right now.

I remember being so psyched for his first solo album back in 2005 and it just not living up to the band. And that’s maybe the best one! Though I’ve got a soft spot for a lot of the stuff on Cradlesong. The third one is hot garbage and the one he made with Butch is fun but extremely cookie cutter on the lyrics side.

I actually felt the opposite about North. Seemed to me like they were really able to slip back into a collaborative groove and make some classic MB20 stuff. There’s definitely a song or two where you hear Thomas-as-solo-artist creeping in, but stuff like “Parade” and “Radio” are better than 99 percent of his solo stuff.

North is damn good and Exile is super underrated, I hope we get something new from them soon

We're saying more or less the same thing with different takeaways. Parade is the kind of song I wanted more of on the album, and I didn't end up getting it.

  8. I can’t stand Matchbox 20, but it’s mostly due to the vocals - just so grating to my ears hearing someone sing like that

The way Rob Thomas sings “you’re so smooth” makes me want to put him on a watch list

I kinda hate matchbox 20 because when I was like 13 the lady my parents always went to get their haircut didn’t ask me what I wanted and at the end was like “it looks perfect! I was going for a rob Thomas look!” I didn’t ask for that lady!!

The radio station I listened to growing up was so hype about “Diamonds” and talking about how they’d never heard diamonds used as a metaphor for tears and such and then they premiered the song and it was like listening to a balloon lose all its air as slow as possible

Also, Smooth is good and I will tell anyone who will listen that Santana should do a new album of duets

Oh yeah, I dunno what that's about.

Like, even if you wanted to say they're the Radiohead of post-grunge singer-songwriters, it's still a daft comparison, when clearly the Goo Goo Dolls is the correct answer.

EDIT: And yes, I know saying singer-songwriter suggests a solo act and not a band, but you know what, it's been a long day.

    ....Always.

    ....AIN'T THAT RIGHT
