The Devil’s Rejects is firmly in “It’s good but not base your whole personality around it good.” territory.

Just finished and I think my overwhelming first impression is indifference. I thought I'd hate it, but moreso I just don't really care. I know it's been said a million times, but I just don't get why everything has to be so nasty, the characters, the dialogue, the settings, he even made pizza look disgusting.

When there's no juxtaposition between Michael's actions and the world around him, there's no impact. When these people are going about their gross little lives, in their gross little houses and workplaces, being gross to each other, who gives a shit if some gross guy comes in and does gross things to them?

None of the choices worked for me. Michael looks really dumb. I was trying to put my finger on it and he looks like when Joey put all of Chandler's clothes on in Friends. Why does he have so many shirts and jackets?! And don't get me started on the hair.

The mom stuff was dumb and looked shitty. Rock Star Loomis was terrible. Loomis on a talk show with Chris Hardwick and Weird Al is just so weird that I wanted to like it (besides Chris Hardwick), but it's so incongruous to Halloween as a whole that I couldn't.

I guess if I had to say something positive, the cast had a lot of character actors I like and there were 3 shots that I thought looked great.

I need to rewatch Zombie’s Halloween II. It’s fascinating how many people loathe it but equally how many people now adore it

I really liked the first Halloween due to it’s back story from his Childhood and darker tone. It was definitely a unique spin on the franchise. I remember being super excited for the sequel and thinking it was one of the most disappointing movies I’ve ever seen. Incredibly boring and weird movie. I don’t think I have it in me to ever revisit it to reevaluate.

Lords of Salem is a cool 70’s era grindhouse movie and I watch it in that perspective.

ugh it is once again time for me to restate that halloween 2 and lords of salem are astonishing films about my own personal trauma

for me it's that zombie's "retrograde tarantino" sensibilities met their match in richard brake, and also that it is a movie about the upper classes mercilessly preying on the lower classes, and that everyone in the film despite being a thin sketch feels so much tenderness for every other thin sketch in the film, and honestly the horrible shaking digital closeups may almost entirely replace the thing i usually love zombie films for—his visual sensibility—but they convey a vibe so concussive that it's almost like the movie itself is traumatized. an ugly film for an ugly world

Now relistening to H2 Gourley and Rust episode. I forgot about this part of the movie, but them making fun of Zombie for thinking it was necessary to explain the main symbolism in his film with the text of a quote from a fake book in the opening is hilarious.

Halloween II is a full on ode to Mario Bava. Inspiration from his tone combined with Zombie’s artistic vision. The trauma shared both by Laurie and the audience. Over the next ten years, psychological horror becomes popular in the mainstream, however, this film set a precedent that is unmatched in its earnestness and brutality.

H2 is the only Halloween I haven't seen. I watched his first one last year and was completely turned off by the dialog

Other than that, the only Rob Zombie movies I have seen are House Of 1000 Corpses (which I remember thinking was good but not liking his aesthetic) and The Devil's Rejects which was ok

I honestly cannot speak to H2 because while I know I watched it, I don't remember anything from it.

I do enjoy House of 1000 Corpses (added it to the Hooptober list this year), The Devil's Rejects, and I found his Halloween to be fine outside of the critiques already mentioned. Haven't seen 3 From Hell. I remember really disliking 31. Outside of Corpses and Rejects, I would probably need to rewatch his other stuff with fresh eyes.

Another one for the local Halloween special fans :) added both to Letterboxd (should be up within a day or so) and will be ripping both, in addition to Haunted Indiana, and uploading to Youtube. Gonna try to make a habit of finding and salvaging as many of these things as possible. Never say I'm not a man of the people

I love this stuff. I was looking for old tapings (late 90's early 00's) of local halloween parades, but haven't found much.

  22. Same. I'll keep an eye out! These two local specials I posted from my hometown are from 2002 and 2003, respectively.

I also haven't watched these yet, but I certainly will be next month:

Looks like there's a lot of retro Halloween commercial comps on Youtube.

Can't remember if this has been posted or not, but it's a super interesting watch about the PA town which gave some inspiration to Silent Hill.
