Can't disagree on the LP hate in the thread called unpopular opinions. Let's talk more about bad poppy fallout songs! ☺

not true at all lol the scene also encompasses emo and post hardcore, there have been several great bands and albums to emerge from the scene in the last five years. touche amore, pianos become the teeth, moving mountains, foxing, la dispute, the world is a beautiful place and i am no longer afraid to die, just to name a few. new school scene. couldn't possibly call any of them a gimmick unless you're an ignorant asshole.

Linkin Park are super talented, also the Jay-Z/Linkin Park collaboration shouldn't work but it does somehow

while far from a favorite in any sense, i think he's way more talented than LP deserves

But why do we call it THE scene? What gives it any priority over a particular music scene? Why do we not just say those bands are part of the emo scene, indie rock scene, post hardcore scene?

You're not grouping them in any meaningful way in terms of music style... you're just allowing record labels to collusively pool marketing together and say "this is the music we are going to promote to high school/college students". It promotes further cliqueyness in music, and closed mindedness from people venturing outside that sound or group of touring musicians who just happen to know each other and have business relationships.

I just often feel like that "scene" is put on a pedestal over others when really a lot of it is just watered down poppy versions of those bands' influences.

I can't even wrap my head around engaging in a discussion regarding the arbitrary nature of the "scene"

I hear scene and think bands with bad hair and pants playing vaguely emo pop rock. I always grouped them by genre mostly.

    Me obviously hahaha.

The term "scene" when used by itself and not to refer to an actual sound (because all those bands are ACTUALLY just pop sensible punk) is just an annoying way to prioritize music to me. No need to recategorize it.

he seems to be enjoying himself just fine thanks, and if my comment TO HIM, a jokey comment, makes anyone else feel uncomfortable, sorry but that's how I talk and I won't be removing myself from the thread or watering down my personality. man nobody's dumping on you and i've been in this thread for ages, it's not like im just swooping in to call you out. i just don't think you realize how tiresome it gets and how it makes the community a lot less open

im literally talking to one person who i am friends with. this makes no sense. i am, however, not enjoying this thread whatsoever right now.

I'm gonna pop in here and defend the use of the phrase "the scene" because I use it...a lot haha. It's just a useful shorthand for the pop punk/rock scene from 2001 - 2008ish. It's the best way to refer to that time and that specific music scene because pretty much everyone, at least on Chorus, understands what it refers to. Unless anyone else has a better descriptor in fewer than two words, I don't get the objections.
