What shape do France run these days? 4-2-3-1?

Watching Almeria vs. Valladolid because nothing else is really on and this has to be one of the most boring games I have watched in a long while. I think it went over twenty minutes without more than one shot and currently are in the 60th with 7 shots. Expected goals is .49 :crylaugh:

For comparison, Torino vs. Lecce is also on and they have triple the amount of shots in about the same amount of time.

Looks like Lee Mason won't be selected for VAR duty this weekend. Not sure if that's technically a reaction to him being a donkey this weekend or whether he wasn't scheduled.

I'm not sure how they populate the VAR room, but are they all ex referees? I wonder if they should be training people specifically to do VAR, because some of the ex refs are consistently re-officiating the games and that's not what it's meant to be for.

We won't get any explanation from Mason (another questionable element), but it feels like he's just looked for a foul with blinkers on. He managed to suggest Williock had fouled the keeper and somehow didn't notice that it was the Palace defender who launched Williock into him. He also didn't include that element in what they then showed the ref on the field. I just can't get my head around it.

I think that's the biggest issue with VAR, that it's manned by old style referees. It's a new technology and should have specialists Manning it.

Not sure how it is in other sports, I know cricket is similar in that the umpires rotate who is on hawk-eye/ video review duty, but cricket is much more objective. They're basically relaying details of what the technology shows them (nick, no nick, in line etc.). Plus, they're mic-ed up.

It's similar with F1 too. They have a driver expert on the stewarding panel, but the bulk of the stewards are specifically there for enforcing the rules. Although, F1 is hardly the pinnacle of implementing their own rules in a consistent fashion...

I think they missed a trick by not relaying the VAR chatter in the broadcast, as that gives a lot of transparency. Works well in rugby.

    Cricket's also inherently stop/start.

Anyone else watching the Wrexham documentary series? I'm really enjoying it so far.

Really good point about having the former driver/ driver expert on the panel. VAR could really benefit from similar, but football is so inherently tribal, regional, subjective, that you'd really struggle to implement that in a reliable and unbias way. But having a former player be involved in the decision making would really help.

  13. Yeah, so far so good. I hate that I already know how this season ends for the team though haha

That's not a lot different to the allocation of referees though.

With VAR and offside, I don't understand why they haven't just simplified the rule to suit the tech. Just make it that you're offside if your whole foot is ahead of the defender's. It's not like the original rule was brought in to stop people getting inches of advantage, it was to stop goal hanging. This whole thing of measuring to the nearest kneecap or nipple is a waste of everyone's time.

I'm curious how the new in/out technology we're seeing in tennis could be used for when ball goes out of play/crosses goal line. It's accurate to the mm on a 130mph tennis serve, surely it could do work with a much slower soccer ball.

Does that work when the ball is rolling along the ground, or just when it impacts. Hawkeye mostly works well, just don’t ask Bournemouth.

Just impact, I imagine. But I assume the system probably is easily adjusted.

I think they initially trailed some form of chip inside the ball for position tracking, but there were some issues because it was really slow. I wonder what that would be like now nearly a decade later.
