Wow I had never heard that story and not at all surprising to read that John Wayne tried to rush the stage. Trash

  10. I still think about how we almost lost Constance Wu, how a woman of color, who led in the biggest film for Asian American representation in decades at the time, was bullied online almost to the point of suicide, for an admittedly shitty thing she said, but something relatively so trivial. It's upsetting that cancel culture is weaponized and becomes this toxic thing that never affects the people it should, people like Dave Chappelle who's said far worse things and Louis CK who's done far worse things are still doing shit like nothing happened.

I don't know if here or the LGBTQ thread is better to post this, but has anyone been following the recent Harry Styles Rolling Stone interview and the claims over the past few years of him queerbating? I am not a part of the LGBTQ community but I wanted to post to see if anyone had any good responses or insight into this. (Posting here because the first tweets are about film)

Tbh when I read the article it seemed to me like he was parroting the director's vision for the film and his take on gay sex in film moreso than talking about his own views. But I can't rly speak to the rest. Harry has a spectacular way of saying nothing in his interviews.

Honest question here from a naive cishet guy - and I know the criticisms of Styles go beyond this - but the talk of queerbaiting makes me wonder whether gender nonconformity must be tied to sexuality? Can he not be a straight man playing with different representations of gender?

I think gatekeeping gender non conformity is just gonna make people feel like they're not a part of a community that they are

I think the issue is Harry has the privilege to explore because he's rich and hot more so but I haven't seen him be gross about it

  15. Queerbaiting is tough because I've always felt uncomfortable criticizing how someone chooses to represent themselves, especially if they may not be comfortable coming out as queer or anything that isn't straight/cis yet. Art is, in itself, a huge way people grapple with coming to terms with who they are.

  16. Like, I'm sure there are valid examples of queerbaiting and others may be able to point them out, but I'm always hesitant to lay that charge on someone who doesn't feel comfortable defining themselves yet. Every path to self-discovery and acceptance is different. It gives me the same vibes as "bi people don't exist, you need to pick a side of the fence," etc.

  18. From what I've understood, one problem I've seen people have with Harry Styles is how once in a while, an article overly praising his gender nonconformity pops up, when that's nothing David Bowie, Prince and many other male popstars weren't already doing decades prior. If I were to compare him to a contemporary popstar, you don't see the same fervor for Lil Nas X for example.

There's also an obsessive part of his fanbase that desperately wants him to be a queer icon for some reason and that will use the tiniest crumbs he gives in his interviews to prove their point. It makes me feel weird because his sexuality is something that he should figure out himself at his own pace, not be pressured into or weaponized by anyone else. That behavior feels almost fetishizing to me.

Obviously just my take and I don’t claim to speak for anyone other than myself here.

At the end of the day, I don’t think anyone is entitled to any information about anyone else. Especially sexuality and/or gender. Would it be cool if one of, if not the biggest stars in the world came out as queer and/or not cisgender? Absolutely. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned both through my own experience and others’, probing and pushing someone to reveal this information only puts you further away from hearing the truth.
I do think it’s fair to be frustrated or upset when he’s held up as a queer/gender nonconforming icon of sorts when he hasn’t asserted those things about himself. Especially, like someone already mentioned, when there are publicly out artists like Lil Nas X and others who aren’t afforded the same level of praise. And especially when you factor in the white privilege of it all.
I find myself going in a bit of a circle with these types of things. Nobody owes me details about their life, but I also don’t think we should slap labels on people who aren’t sharing that information about themselves. It’s complicated and I do understand the frustration, but ultimately we’re not entitled to anything. Harry even says in the interview that he hasn’t publicly announced dating women either. So who knows. It’s his information to tell and I can understand clinging to whatever privacy I could in his circumstance.

The comment about gay sex in film just feels naive and misinformed more than malicious and I’d hope he watched some queer films before speaking on it but apparently not. It’s not hard to say you wanted to show a tender side of masculinity and queerness.

Nick Jonas is the poster child of queer baiting. Him showing up at Stonewall as part of album promo, playing a gay character on TV while giving interviews focused entirely on the physicality of being gay. He’s truly awful when it comes to this.

However, as a gay man, it doesn’t really bother me. The sanitizing of gay culture to appease straight audiences is what truly upsets me.

If anyone in here has watched Uncoupled on Netflix you’ll know exactly what I’m referring to. It’s insulting to watch something like that knowing it’s written by queer writers and has queer actors, yet is still clearly meant to appeal to straight audiences.

people have also been so inappropriately creepy about Harry's sexuality for so long i dont blame him for being vague about it. He had "nudes" leak when he was under 18, when he was under 18 he also had an (imo) inappropriate relationship with a woman in her 30s which garnered him a "cheeky" reputation for liking older ladies, was significantly harassed for years about a perceived romantic relationship with his bandmate... like if he wants to be cagey about his sexuality and protect that part of his life and express it in different ways then i kinda get it. If people treat him like the second coming for wearing a dress in a photoshoot like yeah that's kinda obnoxious, but I don't necessarily see that it's him acting like he's the second coming. I feel like sometimes people associate it with him taking credit for all that when, unless I missed something which is super possible, it's usually fans or journalists projecting that onto him

  25. I wish more Hollywood superstars of that generation, or even just in general, were more wholesome like Brendan Fraser. Why couldn't we have made him famous instead
