i personally think tttyg is the best pop punk record ever

 

i just don't really like the idea of making music ONLY with power chords and octaves. Just because the music style is fast and direct doesn't mean you can't still put some cool embellishments and guitar melodies and stuff in there. Rufio gave you that sugar rush and were also very impressive musicians.

 

tttyg is more than just power chords bruh there are riffs all over the place

 

i once bought a used copy of tttyg and it came signed by pete wentz

 

Not a big RHCP fan but Mother's Milk and Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magick are good records.

 

I guess. I'm not trying to condescend the music by saying this, just using a personal anecdote but I learned every song on TTTYG within a year of learning guitar. While I get that that's part of the appeal of pop-punk in the first place, that it's music for everyone not just the talented or those with high exposure to music, there's something to be said about the fact that Rufio's music STILL challenges me when i pick up a guitar or hop on a drumset to mess around with it, while they also managed to appeal in a lot of the same pop-sensible ways.

 

There's nothing really that's traditional Beach Boys or Ventures or anything of that sort (sadly) but elements of those styles (mostly Ventures) are coming back. Definitely a lot of dream pop and garage sound here too. And I realize Ducktails isn't regarded as a surf band but "Killin' The Vibe" and I rest my case.

Ducktails, Wavves, Apache Dropout, Tacocat, Thee Oh Sees, FIDLAR, Ty Segall, Wavves, Surfer Blood, Together Pangea, The Orwells, Tijuana Partners, Allah-Lahs, King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, Black Lips, Beach Fossils, Miikal Cronin, Chalk Talk, King Khan and the BBQ Show,The Traditional Fools, King Tuff, Bass Drum of Death, etc....

 

All music challenges me when I pick up a guitar cause I am bad at guitar.

 

Ribbons & Sugar would be my go to favorite pop punk album, or Commit This To Memory if we count it as pop punk

 

Commit This To Memory is the best pop-punk album by far.

But yeah, TTTYG is not good. I'd be surprised if anyone who likes that album didn't listen to it as a kid. As in, it's only good through nostalgia headphones.

 

Fervently disagree about Evil Empire being better than S/T. There's not a weak song on S/T (Fistful of Steel maybe), but I'd rather listen to that than Wind Below or Year of Tha Boomerang. The bass sounds better on Empire but the riffs on S/T are sooo much better.

its not the most traditional of pop punk albums but my favorite ever would have to be the starting line's based on a true story
will also always have love for the academy is's almost here

 

ok if we're folding drums into this too there's no way you can say tttyg is simple lol andy hurley is a bomb drummer and slays that record and sorry but if you're gonna brag I will too, I guarantee I could play all of rufios shit no problem if I picked up my guitar and tried it

I don't like album art from Metal bands or any other type of visual aesthetic that involves gnarled and twisted font.

I also don't listen to Metal.
