I'm seeing these articles recently that are like "Has Hollywood finally figured out Gen Z this Summer?" like it's some complicated code they're trying to crack through algorithms and data analysis. The solution to getting to Gen Z is probably a lot more organic than that.

In the mid-2000's the moment that Hollywood won big with Millennial teen and young adults audiences for the first time and defied every notion of data driven prediction of success in media at the time was as simple this:

Was just talking about my theory that Glee ruined fandom and is responsible for how fans feel entitled to demand things from showrunners, writers, and actors. Someday I’ll just go ahead and write an essay

 

it makes sense because the Riverdale writers are also way too online and connected to fandom haha

 

The most I can condense this:
There was a throwaway line in season one about Brittany and Santana hooking up. Fans got loud about wanting it explored instead of just being a one off joke. Naya Rivera goes to production and talks about it. The writers go for it. It was a great move story/character wise but the problem is that now there’s a direct example of fans asking for something and getting it. So now fandom culture, which originally was very specifically kept away from anyone involved in making the art you were a fan of, has no line or at most a blurred line between fan and creator. Shipping culture was never about campaigning for a relationship to happen, it was a fun “what if” aspect to fandom. That’s all gone out the window now
