There's something really weird and kinda sad about putting "formerly on Fueled by Ramen" as a credit on that poster for August Premier. (Not "sad" as in pathetic that they chose to do it; just kind of a bummer that more people aren't into them. They were really great!)

But that's a really rad line-up! Jealous of people who get to attend.

I mean 30 dollars for a concert is insanely cheap. That’s barley more than getting dinner delivered these days

That comment got on my nerves so I’m gonna put this out there. I think I paid $37 for my Manchester Orchestra ticket in March. The venue I saw them at is 24 miles round trip from my apartment. My car gets 26 miles to the gallon so let’s say that cost me $3.25 in gas money. We’re at $40.25.

I parked about a couple of blocks away and it cost me $10 because it was a Saturday in downtown Oklahoma City. $50.25

I bought a water ($6!) at the venue because what am I gonna do, not drink anything for 3.5 hours in a crowded room while singing along? $56.25, and that’s a “cheap” show.

Minimum wage in Oklahoma is still $7.25, so is $56.25 cheap?

It was immature of me, but i smirk when a pop star, who earned their money prior to touring, cancels tours when i think the subtext is 'touring is too hard, or touring is too taxing.' And that's just coming from someone who's been in the underground scene all his life.

I see now that was a comment I should have kept in my head

i mean yes it is. doesnt mean everyone can afford it but in terms of what things cost it is cheap

I just find it distasteful to make any sort of judgements on why someone is cancelling a tour when they say it’s for mental health reasons. You don’t know what is truly going on with him. I mean he just went through a very public breakup that he may still be grieving over. Or he just isn’t in the mindset mentally and/or physically to be touring right now like he said. Whatever the reason, we shouldn’t judge him for being open that he’s going through mental health struggles right now, regardless of his touring past or level of fame or wealth. He’s still just a person at the end of the day.

Not to pile on anyone, but the list price for tickets may be that $20 or $30 but venues and ticket outlets have higher fees post pandemic as well. Forget which show it was but the list was $30 and then $16 in fees and tax, so $46. I bought two so yeah haha. I think this is where you start going down the inequity gaps between the rate at which costs go up and wages go up (but more or less barely stay in line with inflation). It’s a hard time for a lot of people and the bootlickers are very quickly trying to recoup their losses from the last few years at the consumer’s expense.

Not to mention a $25 ticket to a live nation venue still ends up between $45-$50 for a band that pre pandemic is as probably $18-$20 with maybe a $10 fee.

Yup. Cheapest ticket available for My Chemical Romance in Oklahoma City in 3 weeks. 33% more in fees

Yup, I think a $39 ticket to Sum 41's last tour ticket ended up being $60 after fees. Absolutely ridiculous.

That is true but it then begs the question of if going to concerts is a need vs a premium for those with disposable income.

I think with some tours it’s definitely the price of a ticket, other it’s just artists not drawing in general. The ADTR tour is probably bombing due to both of these. A decent ticket to the tour is $60-$100. The band also got a pretty lukewarm reaction to their last album. Combine those and a lot of people are probably going to pass on the show. A lot of these tours didn’t draw super well before and are examples of summer tours that half fill amphitheaters that happen every year to fill venues schedules. Most arena acts, I’ve been paying attention to are doing fairly well.

All of that being said, certain shows have definitely gotten a lot pricier. It’s basically $50-$60 to see bands like Sum 41, NFG, etc and I used to be able to see them for $30-$40. MCR tickets being $150-$300 has definitely hurt their sales in some markets. Hell, I can’t even see a local band for under $20 now days. I grew up on shows $20 or less and used to think $30 was expensive lol

Concerts are definitely a luxury like attending a sporting event or any other touring entertainment act. After two years of not touring artists, venues and the shitty ticketing companies are trying to recoup losses. I spend a lot more going to pro wrestling shows than most concerts so I do think the complaints about concert prices are a little fickle in the long run. Entertainment costs a lot of money to provide and the industry was shut down for two years. Couple that with the gas prices, you have a lot of artists that need to charge more to make what they were making before all of this depressing stuff. Also, if you go to more than 3 concerts a month it’s definitely a luxury at that point and not the norm for mainstream society.

The ones that are the craziest to me are the prices for DIY touring bands. I like to go to those shows because those bands need the money but a show that used to cost 5-10 dollars is now 20-25 bucks. I used to be able to not have to choose between spending money on DIY shows and regular big shows and now I do. It’s pretty wild
