Have a suspicion Tom's guitar amps were most likely DI'd straight into the recording console; meaning he was bypassing the pre-amp in his VOX as this was how he had his live rig setup around that time i believe. If you play guitar you know this is um... yeah an interesting decision. It's why everything sounds quite tinny on that album.

I think it's a combination of all of those things, really. The biggest thing is just that when you don't have a single/mutual producer and are pretty much hands-off with your bandmates' sonic choices, you don't have anyone saying "no, that guitar tone/snare/etc. sounds like shit". Their tones and sounds were all over the place (and frankly, bad in some cases), they had multiple mixers and engineers, so they probably had to do a lot of work to get it all to sound cohesive from song to song (thus not really giving anyone the true sound they envisioned).

I also think they half-assed a lot of it (Travis claims Tom didn't even really listen to the final mixes for review which is indicative of his level of enthusiasm). Then of course some of it was probably rushed out the door because they knocked out their only collaborative songs right at the end. I remember the initial release of "Hearts All Gone" sounded absolutely terrible, like there was almost way too much space in the mix, and I was always amazed at how they could let something like that get released to the public.

All in all, it was just impossible to get a cohesive, decently produced product with the workflow they chose.... That said, I'm still surprised it sounded that bad.

The more important question is who’s playing guitar….

True, don't know why that completely slipped my mind

The more I look at the right one, the more I think it's Matt. Wouldn't they also use Tom's Gibson if it were him? Wouldn't match the stock that being shown in the image

Recording guitar direct isn’t correlated with a tinny sound. The California guitars are direct according to Zakk Cervini, which may or may not sound terrible and harsh, but aren’t really tinny:

I think the Neighborhoods guitar sound is just a bad tone to begin with. AC30’s are a weird choice for how Tom plays.

And the other sounds on the record are dull, but they aren’t poorly recorded. It seems like they were going for an Untitled vibe, to my ear there’s a lot more boxy energy in the 400-800k range, like Untitled, unlike Enema and Toypaj. But the arrangements on Untitled are thoughtful and Neighborhoods sounds like piles of boring overdubs.

Blink's tweet/post says "Just 3 nude dudes" so this makes me think its a WMAA era. That lines up with their hair styles of that era and Tom's strat.

Glad I spent time figuring this out instead of doing actual work.

    EDIT: ^Chris just ninja'd me
