You're fooling yourself if you don't think both Trump's rhetoric and possible policies won't make life worse for people of color than it currently is.

Just looking at the increase in hate crimes against Muslim Americans, it already has begun.

So what? It's true. It will be more dangerous for minorities under a President Trump. Sorry if that's 'not a great look'.

The guy outright cheerleads for police violence. Outright support for those behaviors at the highest levels, not to mention all the private citizens who's views will be legitimized (in their eyes) who will be taking action themselves points to those crimes going up. More of those crimes = more dangerous.

Just because something is already bad (it is) doesn't mean that thing can't become worse (it will)

    Lol.

I was responding to Dom's facetious comment "imagine how dangerous it'd be if Trump were President...". My skin color doesn't prevent me from the ability to point out that said facetious comment is misleading at best.

Sure, Dom probably does have a pretty decent idea. Low information lurkers reading this thread might not (especially the white ones). My response is for them, not for Dom.

Well why should we? What's wrong with it? It's far more polite than saying "you look like you're trying to silence a person of color, dude"

I'm loling at you trying to act like I was telling a person of color what their personal life is like.

Having a different opinion from a person of color isn't trying to silence them. Sorry.

Why does our country need a guy with a British accent to explain basic fundamental facts to them about refugees? Still I'm glad John Oliver exists.

yeah I love and appreciate John Oliver but sometimes it feels weird that people only listen when a cis white hetero man says something

This is a really underrated topic. The racialization and stratification of drug law (and popular opinion) along arbitrary lines is nothing new.

Of course, popular opinion is also influenced by the cyclical nature of the drug fear machine, but it's always mobilized most viciously against the poor. The aura around methamphetamine is my favorite: it being this ultra-dangerous super-drug is a myth. It's just coke for poor folk in trailer parks, just like crack is (more literally, of course) just coke for urban blacks.

As someone who has done his fair share of powder coke, and has spent a fair time working with meth users, the lines between the many amphetamine varieties is more often the not arbitrary as fuck.

I really don't think people are only listening to cis white hetero men so much as these are the only people being given the opportunity/platform/investment necessary to speak out about important issues on a large scale.

I think Sam Bee is better than him at this point in terms of making good points using comedy...but HBO, man. 30 uninterrupted minutes, well funded research team, etc. Gives him an advantage in the "news" part of the show I suppose.

Also, this week's Time cover story is about the late night comedy hosts and their politics. I haven't read the story yet though. Probably will get to it tomorrow or Thursday.

I just witnessed this first hand. Was driving home from my girlfriend's house when the traffic came to a stand still. There were cops and helicopters everywhere, and I kept seeing huge clouds of smoke come up. I just sat on top of my car in the middle of the interstate watching chaos from a safe distance basically. Kind of somber and strange; I never really expected riots to break out just miles from my home. When traffic finally moved, it seems they were burning boxes (apparently taken from a semi-truck that was stopped) and there was also what looked like the burnt remains of a car's skeleton (though I'm not 100% on that).

I'm saying that the violence of black people getting murdered goes beyond who is president. It is in the fabric of American civil society. It never is, and never was, contingent on electoral politics. We're seven years into this administration and some two thousand black people have been murdered since Ferguson - some of whom have been murdered in areas with democratic state and city majorities, as in Baltimore - and you still cannot see past the liberal mythology of "bettering race relations" via casting a goddamn ballot.
