Avatar: The Way of Water (James Cameron, December 16, 2022) Movie • Page 5

  1. I guess the point of reference makes more sense with him discussing television/binge watching, but it's very "old man yells at clouds." I don't even have kids and with work I can hardly fit in a 90-minute movie in a night unless I plan ahead. Not everyone is binge-watching television lol. I know this is a passion project for him, but I've had the Godfather 2 sitting on my entertainment stand for months because I can't find three hours to sit with it.

I mean, James’s quote there doesn’t even reference Stranger Things. That’s the IGN headline

  3. Right. It's still a bizarre headline lol

I don't know why some people online are debating whether or not this is going to bomb. This could literally just play in China and nowhere else and it would still be the highest grossing movie of the year. How insanely popular Avatar is in China seems to be lost in the discourse here.

Also never ever doubt Jimmy C when it comes to making sequels to long dormant IPs hits. This is going to be the biggest movie of the decade so far, bet on that shit.

I have nothing to put up, but I'll take you up on that bet. No way this is the biggest movie of the decade.

  6. I have a hard time believing it will top Endgame or whatever, but I would like to be wrong

This will either be a huge success or a colossal failure; there is no inbetween.

Endgame was technically last decade as a 2019 film. To be the highest grossing film of the decade so far it would need to beat No Way Home which did almost $2B. Avatar 1 did $2.8B 14 years ago so it’s not unrealistic, especially if Avatar 2 gets people coming back for multiple showings due to the technological advancement like the first one did.

I was considering it as the last 10 years and not as in this decade, but I still don't think this will do better than No Way Home. if that's the case. I think it's just been way too long for it to make those numbers.

I've been thinking this for a while, but Avatar came out when the only MCU movies were Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. I'm saying it's a much different cinematic landscape than it was back then, and I feel like Avatar 2 has to do a lot more legwork to be impressive in the face of the current climate.

I'd love to be proven wrong, but this is the vibe I'm getting. But then again, I also for a long time wasn't certain who Top Gun: Maverick was being made for, and it not only did well, but I enjoyed it. So I guess we'll see how things shake out.

Last year the first Avatar was re-released in China and made $44 million in 10 days...for a decade old movie in just one country. The sequel is going to kill it.

One of my new students said the original Avatar is her favorite movie. I guess there are some out there.

Maybe they meant the ride is her favorite... which would make sense unless she's been on Indiana Jones Adventure or Rise of the Resistance.

Please no to the 3D re-revival. Gives me a horrible migraine and I’m sure Cameron’s made some serious technological strides or whatever, but those glasses muddy the frame no matter how you slice it.
