Read the entire story, instead of a screenshot excerpt? It's one of their super long 'featured stories' that was posted a couple days ago about the rise of the far right in Europe, Trump, and Brexit. First part of the story focuses on the current iteration's rise starting in the mid 80s in response to increased immigration from Muslim countries.

 

Yes...the current far right parties in Europe of have never had power in any country.

 

that's not what was written in the story.

"the far right has never taken power in western europe" is a categorically false statement, one so incorrect it is legitimately amusing. i don't know how you can defend it. at best it's poor writing.

 

"We are not targeting the Muslims in general, just the extremists."

Just to clarify, the kind of people in this community are the ones who voted Michelle Bachmann into office

 

That's because it was written with the assumption that people reading the story would know the author was talking about the far right movement that started in the 80s.

As I said, the sentence can certainly be edited and clarified, but otherwise you're just trying to ignore all context to make some point from a days old argument and can't admit that you were wrong because, well, no one likes to admit they were wrong.

It's okay, idgaf, moving on.

 

it's still wrong dude, i read the story and it still struck me as completely bizarre that anyone could write that sentence without some kind of qualifier.

i'm not wrong, you even admit it should be clearer, which is my point. i'm not even really targeting that argument. i shit on vox all the time because it sucks. this was just a particularly egregious instance of them writing something that is hilariously wrong.

 

It wasn't that 'ergegious' or 'hilariously wrong'. Anyone reading the story knows what the author meant. I know because I...ya know...read the story yesterday.

The only world it needs a qualifier in is the world where people screenshot it without any context. Which is a world we live in and why the sentence could have been clearer with two word tweaks. But pretending it's some 'example' of Vox 'sucking' and 'being wrong' is nothing more than shitty, illogical confirmation bias.

well, the rest of the story spends a length amount of time examining the rise of the far right in eastern europe (including a literal border wall!) but then suddenly obfuscates eastern europe by saying it's never happened in western europe, which but whatever. the story suddenly changes pitch as soon as it becomes useful to forget that the far right has had a very successful rise in eastern europe.
