Completely understand that. Watching the We Own the City show on HBO Max just highlighted to me how fucked police unions are and how they can pretty much bend politicians to their will by doing shadow work stoppages that get blamed on politicians.

I wanted to highlight something that I found out is being utilized for the first time in my city and is only one of two cities in Michigan that have this type of law in place.

My city has a Community Benefit Ordinance that was passed a few years ago that was utilized finally for the first time recently. That ordinance states that anytime a developer comes into our town with a proposal and requests over $50k in incentives from the city, that ordinance kicks into action. It requires that the developers meet and negotiate with a small group of delegates–a CBO citizen commission. The commission is made up of volunteer residents from around the proposed development and around the city; they negotiate with the developer in order to agree to some benefits to the community that the developer must provide. This forces the developer to please the community rather than the city council. This was put into place a few years ago after my city got into bed with developer, some illegalities were committed, and then the city and its citizens were on the hook for $300 million dollars.

I really would like to see similar laws rolled out across the country that are similar. This CBO group was able to get some really tangible affordable housing and other benefits out of these two recent developments that got approved. I could see how this could get co-opted by NIMBY's to push the developer away but in these two cases it worked out in the citizens favor.

I’d rather we not let the tobacco industry continue to make a profit off poisoning people and since no one has the guts to directly go after them the next best thing is to end people smoking

I would disagree they are “just as bad” (but it really depends on the quantity and frequency I guess). But yes, the government should be doing more to regulate processed foods and encourage healthier diets

  11. "we're too cowardly to do what actually needs to be done so we're going to do this supremely unpopular half-measure" doesn't seem like great politics

yeah and we should keep pushing the FDA to better regulate those things as well.

I don’t think taking the nicotine out of cigarettes is more politically unpopular than banning tobacco would be haha. I’m all for removing legitimately addictive substances from a product that the industry adds in to make it more addictive

Half measure sure but I don’t think it’s supremely unpopular at all

how many kids start eating this shit at a young age compare to kids that start smoking at that same age? Instead of doing anything actually meaningful they’re doing some stupid bullshit for the headlines. Want people to quit smoking? Invest in addiction treatment etc. Don’t just lessen the nicotine. As someone else in this thread said that just creates black markets.

it’s going to piss smokers off and no effectively make any difference to non smokers so who wins?

it will make the creation of new smokers less likely because the addictive substance will be gone

We can't even regulate weed to be safe in Michigan. The amount of bullshit that has happened with probably the biggest testing company here and its allowance to continue to be in business is wild. Funny thing is that company was started by former State Police Forensic Officers (ACAB). Don't get me started on the amount of re-mediated weed that is on the market. Been keeping my business with a local micro-grower/business rather than big corporate weed.

Im on the fence about the nicotine thing. Thinking about the future, it seems like a good idea to remove nicotine completely to prevent future addiction but it should be coupled with something to help current addicts. Just having less nicotine doesn’t seem like a great idea in any scenario and is a pretty typical less than worthless half measure unfortunately.
