Yes yes a thousand times yes. This same person has been yammering on every single Trio/Skiba thread for years about this. The fact that she can’t see she’s grasping at straws is maddening. If she hates him so much, then fine make a statement and move on. Why must you constantly, over years, post negative crap about it? Good you don’t like he made questionable decisions and has shitty friends, you are so saintly for not being like that. Thank you for pointing it out every single time the trio or skiba are in the newsfeed it’s changed so many people’s minds and made the world better. Its totally not annoying virtue signaling or anything. It definitely doesn’t come off as obnoxious.

 

More than anything else, that just shows that "love for people of color, LGBT etc." is conditional and performative if he's also going to hang out with people who espouse views that... wait for it... totally go against that "love for people of color, LGBT etc." or are known for committing violence against... wait for it... "people of color, LGBT etc." on a disproportional level. Put it a simpler way, he doesn't practice what he preaches, in turn making him a coward and a hypocrite.

This doesn't apply only to this thread, it's more of a rant towards a tendency I've seen occur the most in the Article Discussion forums, making them remain the worst section of this website.

This place used to be called absolutePUNK so let's go back to the basics, shall we?

You know what's punk? Standing up for the oppressed, the marginalized... which Matt, with his platform and privilege, has even more more power to do so. He seems to have done that throughout his career, cool, good for him for doing the bare minimum. What's certainly not punk is siding with people that make the oppressed and the marginalized's lives worse.

Some would blindly turn an eye to the latter or give him excuses, even though
- it undermines the former
- makes the fans, especially those that are part of the oppressed and marginalized, wonder how genuine he truly is (If this forum allowed us to use different font sizes, I'd write this sentence in the largest one)
- is in total contradiction with punk ethos in the first place

That seems to be many of you's position in this thread.

Thankfully, others can see through this bullshit and won't hesitate to call him out. As long as he doesn't change his ways, that should continue. I don't care if that makes him, you and his other stans uncomfortable.

So what about Andriano, Grant, Hoppus, and Barker? Hell even Delonge by association. Then you may as well include the other members of the Sekrets too. What about the bands who support and play on their tours? All who knowingly work with the man to this day most likely knowing these things. If this were as fatally damning as you two allude it to be then what flaw in their characters allows them to continue to work with him and why aren’t you two pulling this crap every time they are in Article Discussion?

I never implied I like any of those people either, nor do I think they don’t also suck by employing a Nazi/abuser sympathizer. But Skiba is the one actively participating in both of those shitty things and I’m not sure why you care so much that I’m not down with that. You could’ve easily scrolled along.

 

That’s where you’re wrong I don’t care about your hate/like status with nazism or it’s supposed proponents. I care about needlessly torching somebody constantly over nothing. It was a few social media posts five years ago. Get over it. The good with Matt Skiba far outweighs this. It’s ridiculous. I’m not trying to debate you lol, I said informational facts about this dude (some of which haven’t occurred over 5 years ago) and you felt the need to comment on my dislike of him. Again, I really don’t care about the “good” of someone who has the friend circle Skiba does. We can agree to disagree there, I really don’t care.

 

No you’re just accidentally debating me I guess. So what has happened recently then that’s so damning? I’m glad you don’t care about “the good” in a flawed human being. That’s holier than thou thinking if i’ve ever seen it and a character flaw of your own. If you think that any of your replies truly represent someone who “doesn’t really care” it sure doesn’t seem like it.

 

I said I don’t care specifically about the good Skiba does, it does not negate that he is friends with neo Nazis and abusers. So I really don’t care about the good he does lol, that’s what I’m saying. And again, I’m not debating you. I said factual information and you decided to jump in and argue my point. So anyway, I’m not debating you anymore (accidental or not), you’re not changing my mine on nazi and abuser sympathizing people (which he still is, it’s not in his past like you’re implying) and I’m going to continue on with my life, being chill that we can agree to disagree.

 

You could at least back up your point by showing that he still is exhibiting this questionable behavior with some semblance of evidence. I’m not trying to change your mind on those things those are good qualities of a good person, BUT what’s not a good quality is constantly sitting in judgement of someone else for their past decisions. How you feel about PUNKS who keep pushing communist symbols & mottos?Beacuse most of those *real* PUNKS do.Are you calling them out as well as it’s against PUNK (hypocritically) ethos as well as communist did as much damage as nazis?As they murdered and destroyed dozen of countries and millions lives?Im from Czech Republic,we have our own history with REAL nazis and communists,both absolutely disgusting and sick ideologies,and I keep getting surprised how many PUNKS in US have absolutely no FUCKING idea what those symbols mean and what they are ,,standing” for and proudly display them on their jackets,tshirts,socials etc.

Skiba’s whole schtick is being dark and edgy. Pair that with an interest in Nordic runes and the Occult, and you’re on shaky ground.

Do I wish he would be more conscious of the imagery he uses and the media he promotes? Yes.

Do I think he’s a Nazi? No, but he needs to do better in terms of the company he keeps. Although, I believe he's cut ties with both Douglas P. and Boyd Rice.

I will say, however, that his support of military and police is disappointing, though I feel that may be inherited from his parents, who are both veterans. He was also a volunteer firefighter.
