With a lot of the information coming out today, it seems like what they said about most of the shooting and killing taking place very quickly at the very beginning was a lie. It sounds like there were several children barricaded in that room with him still alive for an extended period of time and he was allowed to continue killing them whenever he felt like it.

As a parent and just as a human being, that is utterly horrifying. To me it would be worse to know that my child was alive and terrified for an extended period of time before being murdered than to know that someone burst into a room and annihilated them with an assault rifle very quickly. Those kids went through extended psychological torture while those cops fucked around and hung around in a hallway doing nothing to help. Utterly unconscionable.

I would like to think that any adult in that hallway would have wanted to do whatever humanly possible to help those children inside that room, not just police officers, although I absolutely do expect more from them even if technically they are not legally required to do anything that may pose a risk to themselves.

 

The wait to take action by the police is the key takeaway here, but another disgusting detail of this police released timeline is that the cops are effectively trying to shift some blame to the teacher here with that first note "Exterior door (where the shooter entered) is propped open by teacher." You can count on GOP politicians and RW media jumping on that. It basically reads as instructions from police for them to do so.

 

Oh my god the resource officer drove past the shooter and then went after a teacher on the other side of the building instead, thinking that was the shooter. That’s when the kid went inside. Jesus.

 

Random question for anyone who knows - in the unlikely event that Dems gain two senate seats in the midterms and are able to get rid of the filibuster (this also assumes Manchin & Sinema are the only hold outs) can they then push through legislation that was passed by the house in the last session? For example, since the house passed BBB in late 2021, can that same version be brought to a vote in the senate in 2023? Or would it have to go back through the house or start all over from scratch?

 

i am not 100% on this but I think it has to go through the house again. Could theoretically just be voted on again as is instead of going through committee again I assume

 

Our students are planning a walk out June 2nd. I’m not allowed to encourage or help plan so I’ll do my proud celebrating here

 

Also, I can't think of any reasonable or logical reason to make the assumption at that point in time that there weren't kids and/or teachers still alive in the room with him that could still possibly be saved. It's certainly a convenient thought I suppose, because it lets you off the hook if you are afraid to approach the room, but there's just no way to justify that with any type of reasonable logic. Anyone in there is very likely to be hiding and trying to stay as quiet as possible as to not attract more attention to themselves from the shooter. That is a HUGE leap to assume everyone is already dead, and a leap with severe repercussions, as we unfortunately ended up seeing play out.

 

Also, another thing that seems weird about this whole story concocted by the police is that every classroom door that I've ever seen has a window looking out into the hallway. In which case, could you just fire at the shooter from the hallway and/or break the window and unlock the door that way? Even if the window was covered to prevent the shooter from looking in (if they had the time to do that), you could still break your way in pretty easily

 

I suppose it is highly unlikely that they are going to come right out and say "hey, we were scared to move in on the shooter, so we waited almost an hour, during which time the gunmen murdered about 8 or 9 additional kids", but even by the standards of all the other shit they've been lying about, saying you thought the shooter was barricaded in a room by himself and no children were at risk is fucking absurd.

 

Wild that when they use the word “barricaded” what they mean is “we jiggled the handle”

 

Even if they were all already dead, and they know the shooter is still in there alive, what are they waiting for? There's a squad of them against one guy.

Fuck every police officer there. I hope their consciences never give them a moments peace.

 

It is one relatively minor detail out of an entire chaotic and horrifying day where so many mistakes were made, but I just can't get around saying you made that leap, made that assumption in your operational and strategic planning, that there was nobody else alive in that room with him without getting inside there and assessing those victims.

Amen to that last part.
