Tried to find something on this and it seems very shaky legally on what he can do. Sounds like he can reduce them but not all the way to zero and then there is finessing needed depending on the type of loan. According to this link, he legally can not take the interest and apply it to the principal.

Can The President Waive Student Loan Interest?

 

I learned about a year ago that there was a court case here in Connecticut where municipal police can turn a candidate down for a job if they test too high on a pre-employment IQ exam.

Yeah exactly, first thing I thought of as well. So after months of hemming and hawing about how you didn't think you have the authority, you're admitting now you DO have the authority but are deliberately choosing to essentially do nothing. It's almost worse than doing nothing honestly.

It should be all of it but at least cancel $50,000 per borrower if that's the case. FFS.

Yeah that’s pretty anecdotal and I doubt that reflects most high loan borrowers (although 700k seems extreme I’m thinking like 100-200k). Medical doctors are almost a different category because many grad and phd students and these days even lawyers often don’t make enough to not really struggle to pay off high student loan debt with the crazy interest. The 10k doesn’t do much for us not because 10k isn’t a lot of money to us it just doesn’t put much of dent in the loan and the interest will just wipe 10k forgiveness out in a few years

 

I’m willing to suck it up and take everyone’s 10k that doesn’t want theirs

I’m pretty sure my sister has literally just over 10k left in loans, so this’ll basically wipe of the rest of hers out.

I haven’t started paying mine off in hopes that Biden would do something. $10k won’t pay them off for me but it’ll take a significant chunk of out them
