Prepare for a rambling and opinionated post!

Just got home from seeing them! My immediate reaction and review is this:
All-American Rejects were great and Tyson was charismatic as ever, making sure to poke fun at and have fun with the crowd between literally every song. They were hugely entertaining for how short their set was. Lots of making fun of the kids in the crowd who were, as they stated, obviously there for A Day To Remember.
A Day To Remember were really fun. Their props (beach balls, toilet paper rolls, etc.) were fun to watch wreak havoc on the pit and they sounded loud, and heavy as hell. All was good. ADTR have some of my favorite choruses ever, and the breakdowns I roll my eyes at on record sound really monstrous and exciting live. If only the worst people around me weren't going crazy and peaking in annoyance during those moments.
Blink was... good? I honestly enjoyed all of it, and there were moments when I felt like they were killing it. My fiancée and I swayed along to Down and Miss You, and I bounced my head along to the regular hits. Not Now and San Diego were probably my overall highlights. But here's where the ellipses and my general tone come from... having seen blink at both what I consider their height of success ('04) and their reunion ('09), this was the weakest version by a long shot - I felt. As shitty as Tom sounded on YouTube, I've now VERY BEGRUDGINGLY joined the camp of people who feel that something big is missing from the band live without him. I'm conflicted about it because on record they sound so complete and great with Skiba, but live it just felt so stale and indescript. I think I'm just the old jaded guy now after spending months and months standing up for the current lineup. Shit.

She's Out of Her Mind has gotta be the first single that didn't immediately get added to their setlist during a tour, right? I really don't understand it. They must hate the way it sounds live.

  4. I'm gonna be kinda bummed if they don't play that when I see them on the 22nd, but I'm starting to take my hopes down a notch.

Doing some super quick research it looks like they didn't play Always until 2009 when they reunited, unless they randomly played it at a handful of shows during the Untitled tour. Of course Always was officially released as a single in November of 2004 and their last shows until 2009 were in December.

Yeah I really don't understand why it wasn't in the set from Day 1.

Saw this on tumblr. I don't follow this photographer so I have no idea if this was a video or just a photo on the phone.

I'm pretty sure that photographer was in the studio with them a lot, if not the whole time. The user name handle is extremely familiar. If this is a video give it to me now! An EP + Making of Doc please.

At my show last night they ended with "thanks we will see you again next time" although I'm sure it will slow down after this tour I'm pretty sure they are far from done

Took a quick video of San Diego last night

Also wasn't too impressed with the merch but had to pick up this bad boy. #23 of #182 which is pretty sweet

I saw blink a couple nights ago and it was fun, but their set went by fast. Not much talking or banter. Only 75 minutes, which seems rather short for a band of their caliber :/

I'm probably really late on this, but I finally picked up Travis' book. Only got about 50 pages left of it.
This has been a really good read. Especially as a Blink fan, it had a lot of good insight about what the band was like behind the scenes once he joined. Also pleasantly surprised Tom contributed a lot of short passages as well.

Yeah I enjoyed Travis' book too. I wish we got more juicy details in Blink especially in regards to the first break up but overall it was definitely interesting. I could have done without anything with his growing up but I realize in a bio he had to cover it.

I would love to get either a real bio or doc on Blink or individual books on Tom and Mark.

  23. My Blink show is tomorrow! And this is the least excited I've been to see them... I'm not sure why, but I hope it exceeds my expectations and it's a lot of fun. I think I'm mostly bummed that I'm all the way up on the lawn, but whatevvvvvv. I'll let you know how it goes! Haha

I had so much fun at the Barclays show, but it wasn't a typical Blink experience. It was just another really fun concert. In the past Blink 182 shows were something else entirely. The band suffers in Delonge's absence, only because so much of what he contributed was a real part of the band's DNA. You can't harp on the past but what we all grew accustomed to expecting from a Blink show just isn't present anymore. The setlist was solid and singing along to Blink will never get old for me. But Tom's unique, albeit out of tune, voice was very much missed if only for reasons of nostalgia. Mostly though, it was the easy, unfiltered, and very real chemistry between Tom and Mark. People will say that the toilet humor is out of place at this point, and I agree, but the way they communicated and worked off one another on stage was integral in the creation of what we perceive Blink to be.

Regardless of all that, you're going to have a great time. Don't over think it, just have fun.

Yeah, Mark and Matt don't have the rapport that Mark and Tom had and that was basically 70% of blink 182.
